  1. Concerto

    Composer: Okpebholo, Shawn
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Euphonium, Piano
    Genre: Contemporary

    with Piano

Shawn E. Okpebholo’s Concerto for Euphonium and Orchestra was premiered by Steven Mead at the 35th International Tuba and Euphonium Conference in Cincinnati, Ohio in June of 2008. The composer has this to write bout the piece:

“The first movement, “Windows,” was inspired when I was looking out of several windows one afternoon and noticing different scenes. While many different events were happening simultaneously, all seemed to be working in sync.

Movement II, “Invitation to Music,” is a re-orchestration of a movement of a song cycle I composed for soprano, clarinet, and piano. The song cycle, On Music, was set to the poetry of Beatrice Holz:

When music’s magic joins the wordsmith’s inspiration,
and crafted intuition transmutes poet’s art to song,
    a wedding of miraculous dimension
invites our brief excursion to a spiritual realm
where music’s elements and time ephemeral
strive to be merged as one eternal bond.

“Guanabacoa,” the title of Movement III, is the name of a small town near Havana, Cuba where Afro-Cuban music is prominent, and where Ernesto Lecuona, a Cuban composer known for his Afro-Cuban music, was born. Lecuona’s composition, La Comparsa, uses a very distinct Afro-Cuban rhythm that is the basis of this movement.

  3. Concerto

Composer: Marcello, Benedetto Arranger: Stuckemeyer, Patrick
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Euphonium, Piano
    Genre: Baroque

    with Piano

Like his elder brother Alessandro Marcello, Benedetto was principally a Venetian official, serving as a magistrate for some 20 years. A more prolific composer than his brother, Benedetto left little indication as to when any of his works were composed. A pupil of Lotti and Gasperini, Marcello was held in high regard throughout much of the 18th and 19th centuries. Chief amongst his works are the Salmi, highly characteristic works incorporating quotations from Greek and Hebrew interpretations of the Psalms of David. The Concerto for Oboe was written originally in D minor, but was lowered to C minor and edited for content by Patrick Stuckemeyer.

  4. Concerto

Composer: Cimarosa, Domenico Arranger: Stuckemeyer, Patrick
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Euphonium, Piano
    Genre: Baroque

    with Piano

Cimarosa was a violinist, keyboardist, singer and composer. He was Italian, and probably the central figure in opera of the late 18th Century. He was in the service of Catherine II in St. Petersburg from 1787 until 1791. While as an opera composer, Cimarosa was also a highly skilled composer of various instrumental concerti. The strength of his music lies in the richness of his melodies, the brilliance and energy of his rhythmic motifs, and his constantly lively accompaniments. Patrick Stuckemeyer arranged this setting of the Oboe Concerto in C-major in 2004. The piece was lowered to Bb-major and edited to make it more idiomatic for both the euphonium and trombone.

  6. Concerto for Euphonium

    Composer: Nunes, Matthew
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Euphonium, Piano
    Genre: Contemporary

    with Piano

This Concerto for Euphonium and Wind Band was composed for one of my former teachers and fellow euphonist Dr. Gail Robertson. For this work I based the material around pitches corresponding to each letter of her first name: G = G natural; A = A natural; I = Ionian, or the current key’s tonic, C natural; L = Lydian, or the fourth degree of the current key, F natural. Each movement is derived in some way from this figure.

The work begins with an energetic fanfare and a taste of the second theme. The euphonium enters with similar pomp and dazzling virtuosity that settles into more heroic statements. Next, the euphonium soars over thick ensemble textures in a tender reflection. Finally, the soloist charges forth in a ferocious display of dexterity and power.

The Concerto premiered April 21st, 2016 by Dr. Gail Robertson (euphonium) and the Little Rock Wind Symphony - Israel Getzov, conductor.

  7. Concerto for Euphonium

    Composer: Liang, Wan-Yun
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Euphonium, Piano
    Genre: Contemporary

with Piano (band version available soon)

Ms. Wan-Yun Liang is a young Taiwanese woman composer, whose works mostly focus on winds chamber music as well as ensemble works. The Euphonium Concerto, Ms. Liang’s latest composition, was commissioned by Shih-Yao Huang, a Taiwanese Baritone player, and the winds ensemble of National Chung Hsing University, Taiwan. This Concerto contains three movements. The first movement is in a sonata form with two contrasting style melodies. The second movement is titled “Rondo” and the main theme is played by the Alto Saxophone player. In the middle section of this movement, the music turns into a charming waltz and which leads goes back to the beginning section. The third movement is a fast dancing movement with a slow introduction. As a brass player herself, Ms. Liang is willing to give the solo part many fast tonguing passages as well lyrical melodies to demonstrate the specific characteristics of this instrument. This work was premiered in July 7th, 2018, by Shih-Yao Huang and the winds ensemble of National Chung Hsing University, Taiwan, under the direction of Chwan-Yaw Foo.

  8. Concerto for Euphonium

    Composer: York, Barbara
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Euphonium, Piano
    Genre: Contemporary

    with Piano

In four movements and subtitled "Creative States", this concerto will allow the audience's imagination run wild as the performer paints the picture:

    I. Wonder

    II. Emptiness

    III. Emptiness

    IV. Joy

    This piece was commissioned by:

    Amy Schumaker Bliss

    Lauren Veronie Curran

    Jonathan Helmick

    Jamie Lipton

    Gail Robertson

    Travis Scott

    Evagene Wellman

I tend to think that the subtitle and movement titles of this piece should be fairly self explanatory. However, after thinking about it a bit I realized that perhaps there is room for at least a little elaboration. This piece is about states that I (and you?) can put myself in when I have little or no inspiration for a piece. In that sense, it was a bit of a joke on myself as I was writing this concerto. I have always claimed that there is plenty of human and personal subject matter about which to write, so this is about what one can do when not feeling particularly inspired.

Three of the movements are states of childlike awareness - Wonder, Playfulness and Joy. The second movement is more of a meditative state, Emptiness, and is musically reflective of the piano "Gymnopedies" of Erik Satie. To me, it is a zen like emptying of oneself, creating a mental and emotional vacuum into which inspiration can enter. What is not mentioned here is that deadlines can also be a powerful impetus towards creativity for composers and other artists. Deadlines are the most terrifying, but often the most effective.

  11. Concerto in A Minor

Composer: Vivaldi, Antonio Arranger: Renshaw, Gretchen
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Euphonium, Piano
    Genre: Baroque

    with Piano

Antonio Vivaldi (1687-1741) wrote his “Concerto in A minor, Op. 3, No. 6, RV 365” in 1711 as a part of “L’estro Armonico” (Harmonic Inspiration), a set of twelve concertos for various combinations of instruments. One of the best known of this set is the sixth, which was originally written for solo violin, second violin, viola, and continuo. In this edition, the soloist will find throughout the score “solo” and “tutti” markings, which indicate the places where, in the original version, the principal violin plays as a soloist or together with the second violin part. The euphonium soloist should play with a light, agile sound in “solo” sections and a fuller sound in “tutti” sections. While negotiating the significant technical challenges involved in playing a piece originally written for the violin, the performer may enjoy the intensity and excitement of Vivaldi’s compositional style.
