  2. Monolith

Composer: Hightower, Matt Instruments: Electronics, Euphonium
    Genre: Contemporary

    with downloadable backing track

Monolith was composed during the most tempestuous year in my lifetime. Daily headlines were something out of a dystopian or science fiction movie.

One such headline addressed Monoliths mysteriously appearing around the world. Some speculated aliens and others, vigilante artists. Either way, it was the rare headline that brought a bit of wonder and brevity to a emotionally draining year of pandemics and social unrest. My former colleague and friend, Kyle Millsap approached me in the fall of 2020 about writing a piece for an upcoming album of his that would feature music for solo trumpet with fixed media. Because of the pandemic, I had spent many more hours than usual in front of a computer with new, to me, software like Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro so I thought, “sure, why not?”

The result of that collaboration was “Monolith.” Kyle is a towering figure in his own right standing at an impressive 6 feet 8 inches tall and a fan of popular science fiction shows like Dr. Who and Star Trek. Monolith is programmatic in nature and meant to depict towering Monoliths falling from the sky and crash landing on Earth and asking the age-old question: does extraterrestrial life exist? If so, can it co-exist with humanity?

  3. Necroterror

    Composer: Lester, Ian
Instrumentation: Solo and Electronics Instruments: Euphonium
    Genre: Contemporary
For Euphonium and Fixed Media (electronics), “Necroterror” was inspired by the synth-heavy soundtracks of 1980's zombie movies. I have always been a fan of horror movies and the soundtracks that help bring them to life. The first one to grab my attention was George A. Romero's Day of the Dead (1985). This is my homage to horror movies along with George A. Romero, who passed away in 2017. Learn More

  4. Neon Dream

    Composer: Lester, Ian
Instrumentation: Solo and Electronics Instruments: Euphonium
    Genre: Contemporary
With Fixed Media: Written In 2019 for SSG Irving Ray of the United States “Pershing’s Own” Army Band and premiered at Sam Houston State University in February of 2020, Neon Dream is a work for solo euphonium and Fixed Media/CD. It draws inspiration from laser tag arenas and attempts to convey the excitement and adventure that comes with them, as well as the nostalgia experienced by adults who grew up going to these establishments. The piece is divided into six parts, each dealing with a particular aspect of laser tag or term associated with the activity. Learn More

  5. Paracosms

    Composer: McMillan, Benjamin
    Instrumentation: Solo Instruments: Euphonium
For unaccompanied euphonium and in four movements, “Paracosms” highlights the many abilities of the euphonium, from the lyrical and technical, to the generally under-explored low register. I chose the title, which refers to a detailed and consistent imaginary world explored over a period of time in one’s mind, to give each movement a somewhat programmatic context, with the exception of the first movement (which is a bit of a tongue-in-cheek jab). In doing so I hoped to create a work that would provide interest for the listener as well as the performer, where many unaccompanied pieces tend to stray into “weird” aural territories. The result is a challenging and diverse work. Learn More

  6. Pavane

Composer: Faure, Gabriel Arranger: Lisjak, Vanja
Instrumentation: Solo and Harp Instruments: Euphonium, Harp
    Genre: Classical

    with Harp

The Pavane in F-sharp minor, Op. 50, is a composition for orchestra and optional chorus by the French composer Gabriel Faure, written in 1887. Obtaining its rhythm from the slow processional Spanish court dance of the same name, the Pavane ebbs and flows from a series of harmonic and melodic climaxes, conjuring a cool, somewhat haunting Belle Epoque elegance. This edition was arranged for euphonium and harp by composer Vanja Lisjak for euphonium virtuoso Steven Mead.

    Composer: Balmages, Brian
Instrumentation: Solo and Brass quintet Instruments: 2 Trumpets, Horn, Trombone and Tuba, Euphonium
    Genre: Contemporary

    with Brass Quintet

Composer Brian Balmages says, “This contemplative and thoughtful work was commissioned by a consortium of schools led by Alexander Lapins at Northern Arizona University. Lapins requested that the work have a solo euphonium or tuba option. While the two parts are very similar, they diverge in key places to take advantage of the unique characteristics of each when necessary. The work is meant to showcase the lyrical capabilities of the tuba and euphonium while also allowing for some virtuosic work.”

Composer: Kelly, Thomas Instruments: Electronics, Euphonium
    Genre: Contemporary

    with downloadable elctronic back track

“This work was written for the Canadian euphonium player Carina Lam. The piece is set outside of the earth’s atmosphere, in space. It explores the idea of a person being completely detached from anything ( Set Adrift ) and having no human contact. There are three sections in this piece, each with their own emotional ranges. The opening section has a feeling of loneliness, while the middle section has a feeling of enjoyment, tangled with cries for help with the introduction of the S.O.S. rhythm. In the final section we return to a feeling of loneliness, which turns to despair as the piece fades out into the dark, unending universe.”- Thomas Kelly

  14. Shipped - Pavane pour une infante defunte

Composer: Ravel, Maurice Arranger: Lisjak, Vanja
Instrumentation: Solo and Brass ensemble Instruments: Bass Trombone, Euphonium, Marimba, Trombone, Trumpet, Tuba, Vibraphone
    Genre: Classical

with 3 Trumpets, 4 Horns, 3 Trombines, Tuba, Vibraphone and Marimba

The idea of arranging this piece for large brass ensemble was a result of my intention to present Steven Mead’s lyrical qualities and the huge potential of his rich and colorful sound to a Croatian audience when he was a guest soloist in Zagreb. While we spoke about the program for the concert, I mentioned Ravel’s Pavane as a nice addition to my Concerto and the other Pavane (one by Faure, for solo euphonium and harp), and Steven supported the idea instantly, as it turned out that this piece was his favorite in his early euphonium soloist days. As he soon became a world famous virtuoso, where listeners constantly asked for higher and faster bravuras, I gladly used my chance to present the forgotten poetic and warm side of the euphonium. I avoided the fashionable stereotypes of many of today’s composers–making an artist break his fingers or lips by choosing extra fast pieces originally for violin or flute and arranging it for tuba.

The inspiring challenge was to create the atmosphere present in Ravel’s own orchestration of this piece, where no instrument plays a typical solo role. It wasn’t easy to achieve so many colors without strings and woodwinds. Yet, here we have the euphonium as a lead voice while it is also well incorporated into vertical blocks with french horns, trombones, and trumpets. Full symphony sized brass sections fuction here mainly to provide harmonic body, with the great percussive and melodic help of marimba and vibraphone. The result is an arrangement that is demanding in a sense of creating the right flow (not too slow – as Ravel hated it this way). Pavane is, after all, a dance.

A recording of this arrangment can be found on Bocchino’s CD release “Croatian Euphonic Brass,” together with a recording of another publication by Potenza, an arrangement of the Pavane by G. Faure, presented on this CD in the best possible way–by Steven Mead, who inspired me to try to give these masterpieces new shape.
