Simone Mantia is one of the most important euphonium virtuosi in the history of the instrument. His contributions to the euphonium repertoire are significant. A composer and arranger, Mantia recognized the need to expand the euphonium repertoire and was active in bringing the euphonium from the back of the band to the front of the stage as a solo instrument.

This solo collection presents modern editions of some of the most well-known pieces in Mantia’s repertoire. These editions are based on the materials found in the Simone Mantia Collection, a resource archived in 2009 by Gretchen Renshaw which contains many of Mantia’s musical possessions. Through collaboration with Steven Mead, Renshaw has aimed to correct the errors in the original versions of these pieces and provide editorial suggestions that will aid in exciting performances of these works.

The titles included in this collection are: Believe Me, If All Those Endearing Young Charms, Valse Caprice “Priscilla”, Rio Rita, The Southerner, Solvejg’s Song and Fantasie Originale.

Giovanni Simone Mayr’s Concert pour le Bassoon et Plusieurs autres Instrument avec l’accompagnement is a one movement work loosely modeled after the Viennese Classical sonata allegro form created by Haydn and Mozart. Drawing on more than just form, this work often seems to pay homage to another famous work for bassoon and orchestra by Mozart. Rarely performed today, this work provides an effortless transition into the repertoire of the euphonium. Taking the instrument through a variety of variations, ranges, and dazzling technical demands, the work provides a refreshing piece of repertoire from the Classical period. This reduction, by Travis Scott, is based off the composer’s manuscript in which very few articulations were marked, thus rendering those found here as mere suggestions.

Goedicke’s Concert Etude, op. 49 was originally written for trumpet, and remains Goedicke’s most popular and most frequently performed work. It has been arranged for nearly every instrument in the brass family at one time or another, and here is accompanied by a flexible brass ensemble

This versatile solo works great as a showpiece for either euphonium or trombone with a variety of accompaniments. The accompanying ensemble can be trombone quintet, tube/euphonium ensemble, or simply a mix of low brass instruments. This accompaniment will also work with the original trumpet solo edition.

Jeremy Smith’s Sonata for Euphonium and piano is a three movement work with movements titled Busyness, Meditation, and Service. Busyness represents the busyness of life, how there’s always something to do. It features both happy, harmonious sections and chaotic, dissonant sections. Meditation represents the calm after the “crash and burn” from the busyness of life. The final movement depicts a newly energized person recharged after the meditation, and is portrayed through popular music motives.
