  4. Hymn of Acxiom

Composer: Shih, Cynthia Yih Arranger: Horne, Benjamin
Instrumentation: Ensemble Instruments: Bass Trombone, Trombone
    Genre: Contemporary

Hymn of Acxiom is an arrangement for trombone choir of Cynthia Yih Shih’s popular song by the same name. Under her stage name, Vienna Teng, Yih Shih released Hymn of Acxiom on her 2013 album Aims. The song is about the multinational marketing database company Acxiom. Acxiom is an American company which profits from collecting data about people. This data is derived by means of: things we search on the internet, purchases made both online and offline, age, race, gender, income, location, etc. Acxiom compiles this data on each individual person and then sells the information to retailers so those companies can target specific persons to advertise their products. For Hymn of Acxiom, Yih Shih uses a voice harmonizer which allows her voice to be emitted and altered in accordance to the notes she plays on an electric keyboard. This also adds for an “electronic” timbre to her voice as the song is written from the perspective of Acxiom’s literal database. The chilling lyrics inspire both empathy and uneasiness from a promising yet dubious voice that carries a religious vernacular.

Hymn of Acxiom has been arranged for Trombone Choir by Benjamin Horne

  5. In Time

    Composer: Zugger, Thomas
Instrumentation: Sextet Instruments: Alto Trombone, Bass Trombone, Trombone
    Genre: Contemporary
    6 parts;

In Time was composed January 1st 2007 and premiered later that month by the Capital University Trombone choir at the Indiana IMEA conference. It was composed in honor of my mother Virginia Schwan Zugger who died of cancer July 2006. Her mothers name was Lina McGinty, part of my half Irish heritage. It is an Irish Air composed from memories of the lullaby’s my mother sang to us when we were children.

The lead is actually in trombone one and that voice should drive both the dynamic and the phrasing. Alto trombone is an obbligato line and is good for inexperienced players as it centers around Eb. The work can be performed one on a part without conductor, or with a much larger group with conductor. It is a song of love and loss and should be played with that feeling. Learn More

  11. Last Breath, The

    Composer: Wilson, Kenyon
Instrumentation: Octet Instruments: Bass Trombone, Trombone
    Genre: Contemporary

    From the composer:

One thing humans all have in common is that one day we will all take our very last breath of life. This piece explores the entire range of emotions we might experience as we take this last breath and reflect on our lives, from revelation in our most joyous memories to resignation to our ultimate fate.

As a member of the Atlanta Trombone Ensemble, I specifically composed this piece to both highlight the group’s strengths while challenging the group’s weaknesses. I kept a fairly basic chord structure for clarity, but incorporated a few meter and tempo changes. The melodic material is passed around among all parts, so everyone gets a moment in the spotlight. A lovely cascading figure at the end between all parts highlights the group as a whole rather than featuring any individual parts.

I am honored to have composed this for the Atlanta Trombone Ensemble.

Romeo and Juliet (1839) is Berlioz’s third symphony, known as the ‘symphonie dramatique’. While the work contains sections for voices, the main dramatic material is instrumental, including the “scene d’amour”, or love music. Often this instrumental music is performed separately as part of an orchestral suite extracted from the symphony. Learn More

  17. Midnight Sounds

    Composer: Zugger, Thomas
    Instrumentation: Octet Instruments: Trombone
    Genre: Contemporary
    8 parts

Midnight Sounds, which subtitled An Alaskan Portrait, was composed in 2008 after traveling to Alaska. The extraordinary scenery Resurrection Bay and Denali National Park was inspiring. The piece is in four sections: introduction, allegro, moderato and allegro/coda. The opening motive is based on the open fourth and fifth interval. That motive is passed throughout the ensemble and is also altered to create the melody of the allegro. Every vista in Alaska is larger than life, space is abundant everywhere. I’ve tried to capture that space and beauty using the most resonant of all instruments! Learn More
