A Caged Bird
Composer: York, Barbara
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Bass Trombone, Piano
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano
This piece was not written specifically in response to either the poem by Maya Angelou or that by Paul Dunbar that both refer to “the caged bird”. However, there is no doubt that both poems have inspired my own further exploration and now musical extrapolation on the subject of being “caged” and of still “singing” in spite of this. With all due respect and admiration for Ms. Angelou and Mr. Dunbar, I have attempted here in my own concept of “cagedness” to include, beyond racial references, also those issues that include gender, sexuality, economic status, medical/physical problems and any number of other situations that create restrictive and even imprisoning boundaries from which we and all others struggle to break free and find fully human, creative and even spiritual expression within ourselves. Even within the many bonds and restrictive boundaries that we often find ourselves, it still seems to be a fundamental part of our Nature as both human and Spiritual beings that we cannot help but “sing” in both joy and praise both from ourselves and to our own Creator despite the sometimes, even apparently insurmountable obstacles we encounter. For me, this piece is not so much an exploration as to “why the caged bird sings” as it is simply a commenting, even with some measure of wonderment, on its remarkable inevitability.

A Prayer and Wings
Composer: Zugger, Thomas
Instrumentation: Solo Instruments: Trombone
Genre: ContemporaryunaccompaniedA Prayer and Wings was composed in late fall 2008 after a trip to the outer banks of North Carolina and a visit to the Wright Brothers monument in Kitty Hawk. Seeing the memorial drew me to think of those first pioneers of flight, and the fear that they must have had to overcome to attempt to soar toward the horizon.
The first movement, Canto, is a prayer for the airmen, lead by the cantor. It should be performed facing the open piano (full stick) with the bell pointed at the strings. The cantor sings the prayer and then the congregation replies. In this instance, the congregation is not only the more complex rhythms, symbolizing the inaccurate entrances of many people, but also the echo created by the passive piano. The performer may improvise some of the rhythms to create even more echo. The second movement, Wings, is the actual flight, and should be performed facing the audience. The eighth notes are the wind that was the catalyst. Midway through the flight, the airmen begins to recite the prayer to himself (passive piano engaged) and a very slight echo is heard in the distance. Gradually the plane descends back to the ground and mans first flight has occurred. For the pianist, Ped. signifies depressing the sustain pedal, * denotes releasing the pedal. Learn More

Awaiting Julian (Part I)
Composer: Gluck, David
Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Bass Trombone, Trombone
Genre: ContemporaryFrom the composer:
Part II of I has a Bossa/Latin based rhythmical feel. It alternates between “brighter” and “darker” melodic motifs. At letter F, trombone 1 solos, however, parts can be exchanged allowing any member to solo. Starting at letter H, the piece quotes a portion of a famous recorded guitar solo from a late 1960s innovative west coast rock/pop band and treats it as a musical round. Awaiting Julian Part II works well following Part I but can certainly be played on its own. For performance ideas, please refer to the studio-recording version of the piece on the album “Obsessed With Treasure” which can be found on all on-line digital music platforms.

Bailamos (We Dance)
Composer: Gluck, David
Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Bass Trombone, Trombone
Genre: ContemporaryFrom the composer:
A couple of years ago I binge-watched several classic spaghetti western films and fell in love with the music. I wanted to compose a piece that captured the spirit of those wonderful soundtracks. The main theme and motifs in Bailamos are meant to conjure up the rugged, unbridled, and grandiose images of the Wild West back in the day. The studio-recorded version of Bailamos is on the “Obsessed With Treasure” album and can be found online. It contains many sound effects and percussion that help in creating the Americana, “open-range” feeling of the piece.

Bone of Lucifer, The
Composer: Romera, Juan López
Instrumentation: Solo and Trombone Ensemble Instruments: Bass Trombone, Trombone, Tuba
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano
The Bone of Lucifer was written in November 2010 for the wonderful bass trombonist Nuno Martins to play with Mr. SC and the Wildbones Gang. I tried to write a piece that leaves the bass trombonist room to play both with full power and adroit phrasing. Although it traverses a variety of sections, feels, and characters, the piece is essentially a passacaglia over an ostinato of nine pitches that I found to be particularly demonic.

Bone to Pick
Composer: Zegiel, Evan
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Bass Trombone, Piano
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano;
With a background in rock and heavy metal, I figured it was time to write something in an art music setting using similar musical materials. The bass trombone is a great instrument for expressing aggression, and thus fits this style very well. However, there are many moments of lyrical and romantic playing which find their way into this piece. These “happier” elements eventually win out in the end, which is where the title comes from. “Bone to Pick” is essentially a musical narration of the path of an argument.

Can-Can
Composer: Offenbach, Jacques Arranger: Meador, James
Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Bass Trombone, Trombone
Genre: Entertainment, RomanticFrom the arranger:
The boisterous Can-Can is a highly energetic, physically demanding dance made popular in French cabarets in the mid to late 1800’s and continues to be popular today. Flashy, bawdy, and provocative, the dance can include such acrobatic movements as high kicks, splits, cartwheels, and even flying jumps. Many composers have written music for the can-can, but undoubtedly, the most famous example is the Infernal Galop from Jacques Offenbach’s Orpheus in the Underworld. Offenbach composed the opera bouffe, which is a form of French operetta, in 1858, and although it shocked some audiences early on, it quickly became extremely popular and spread outside Paris.
This version for trombone quartet was arranged for Bones Apart, the internationally acclaimed trombone quartet comprised of all females from the U.K. After hearing their inspirational second CD, Enigma, and writing a review of the recording for the ITA Journal, Meador was compelled to arrange a flashy, crowd-pleasing piece for the group to perform. In keeping with the flamboyant style of the piece, this arrangement goes high, low, soft, loud, fast, and faster. It challenges the extremes of register, technique, and flexibility, and is sure to evoke a standing ovation from the toughest of crowds. (And, there is no place to breathe. Enjoy!)
