  6. A Prayer and Wings

    Composer: Zugger, Thomas
    Instrumentation: Solo Instruments: Trombone
    Genre: Contemporary
    unaccompanied

A Prayer and Wings was composed in late fall 2008 after a trip to the outer banks of North Carolina and a visit to the Wright Brothers monument in Kitty Hawk. Seeing the memorial drew me to think of those first pioneers of flight, and the fear that they must have had to overcome to attempt to soar toward the horizon.

The first movement, Canto, is a prayer for the airmen, lead by the cantor. It should be performed facing the open piano (full stick) with the bell pointed at the strings. The cantor sings the prayer and then the congregation replies. In this instance, the congregation is not only the more complex rhythms, symbolizing the inaccurate entrances of many people, but also the echo created by the passive piano. The performer may improvise some of the rhythms to create even more echo. The second movement, Wings, is the actual flight, and should be performed facing the audience. The eighth notes are the wind that was the catalyst. Midway through the flight, the airmen begins to recite the prayer to himself (passive piano engaged) and a very slight echo is heard in the distance. Gradually the plane descends back to the ground and mans first flight has occurred. For the pianist, Ped. signifies depressing the sustain pedal, * denotes releasing the pedal. Learn More

  7. Caravaggio

    Composer: Stevens, John
    Instrumentation: Solo Instruments: Trombone
    Genre: Contemporary

    unaccompanied

    From the composer:

Caravaggio for solo trombone was composed in 2015 for Mark Hetzler, Professor of Trombone at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. It is a four-movement work of about 9 minutes in length. The work was inspired by the incredible artistry of the Italian painter Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio (1571-1610). His work, ahead of its time in many ways, changed the visual art world forever and has served as inspiration for generations of artists the world over. I see many similarities between his “outside the box” artistry and that of trombonist Mark Hetzler, whose performances and recordings are stunning, eclectic and instrumental in breaking new ground for the trombone.

The movements are titled after four elements of Caravaggio’s painting that stand out to me- Realism, Shadow, Vulgarity and Light. I also see these as elements of Mark Hetzler’s performances. Although I have made many indications to steer the performer in certain directions musically, I also hope and expect that each performer will approach this piece with a passion and abandon that will result in a musical performance that is about much more than notes, rhythms and dynamics. This work is a vehicle for the trombone soloist to be as expressive as possible. A look at the works of Caravaggio, particularly in context with the other well known painters of the time, should provide substantial inspiration.

In 2018, Spanish bass and contrabass trombonist Javier Colomer will record a new album that includes works for trombone and organ as well as for unaccompanied bass and contrabass trombones. The music on this disc spans four centuries, from Palestrina and Gabrielli through Handel, Schubert, and Faure, among others. The newest piece on the album – a work for unaccompanied contrabass trombone by American composer Frank Gulino – had not been completed at the time

Javier Colomer is an internationally renowned bass and contrabass trombone soloist and teacher who has given recitals and master classes across the globe for more than 25 years. During that time, Javier has performed with orchestras and wind bands both as an ensemble musician and concerto soloist, and presented masterclasses to over a thousand students from some of the world's leading conservatories and universities. He is a past member of the ITA Board of Advisors and also authored “The World of The Contrabass Trombone,” the first comprehensive method book for that instrument. Javier's advocacy of the contrabass trombone as a solo instrument is a natural extension of his experience as a performer and pedagogue, and he continues to regularly commission and premiere new works for the bass and contrabass trombones. 12. Predator-Prey

    Composer: Friedland, Zach
    Instrumentation: Solo Instruments: Trombone
    Genre: Contemporary

    Unaccompanied

Predator-Prey was written for the 2020 Regional Association for Research in the Gulf of of Maine Symposium. The piece explores six instances of predation in the Gulf of Maine with each movement taking us up a step in the food chain.

    I. A school of fish swim through the open water. They take in water and filter it out through gill rakers finding the plankton within. They continue on searching for more food.

II. As the school continues to swim, a larger fish approaches. It picks a smaller member of the school and after a brief struggle swallows it. It is sated, it moves on letting the rest of the school swim away.

III. On the bottom, a starfish works to pry open a clam. It is hard, slow work, but once done the clam is enveloped.

IV. A large cormorant gracefully flies overhead spotting the large fish making the hunter the hunted. The first bout is a miss, the second attempt is a capture. The birds flies towards the horizon.

    V. A harbor seal is swimming gracefully, little does it know a predator is lurking. A great white shark is closing, guided by smell. It springs it’s attack, the seal uses speed and flexibility to evade. The seal swims away.

VI. Unusual, but not unfamiliar sounds approach, a boat. The school of fish knows it must move. They are overtaken, tossed, tangled, and pulled up into the net. The remains of the school swim on.

    Composer: Robin, Greg
    Instrumentation: Solo Instruments: Trombone
    Genre: Contemporary

    unaccompanied

Written for trombonist Steve Parker’s Language and Sound Project, S.P. explores the transition between air, noise and pitch. This trombone solo is a duet with oneself. Through the use of a jazz brush or similar brush, percussion is performed in the bell while other musical events unfold through the use of air, speech, and traditional pitch. S.P. is a short and concentrated work well suited for the trombonist looking to explore less traditional sound materials.
