  3. Cheerful Suite

    Composer: Mullen, Paul
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Tuba
    Genre: Contemporary
    with Piano

Cheerful Suite is a light-hearted work for solo tuba and piano in five short movements. It received its premiere in 2013 in Ocala, FL, with the composer on tuba and Ryan Pagels on piano. The work begins with a brisk romp, followed by a stately modal march. Later a tender lullaby gives way to a racing flourish of excitement to conclude the work. It is the hope of the composer that Cheerful Suite will bring joy to both performers and audience members alike.

Paul Mullen has been composing music since 1999. He attended Stetson University in 2000 to study composition with Kari Juusela. While there, his composition for trombone choir, Epitaph, won 1st place in the SCI composers competition. He went on to earn his masters degree in music composition at the University of Missouri - Kansas City, studying with Jim Mobberley, Paul Rudy, and Chen Yi. Along with composing, he has been active as a tubaist, performing with the First Coast Wind Symphony in Jacksonville, FL, the Southern Winds in Deland, FL, and by frequently giving solo performances. 4. Concerto

    Composer: Flinn, Wes
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Tuba
    Genre: Contemporary

    with Piano

While the piece is in three movements (fast-slow-fast), calling it “traditional” does not seem entirely appropriate. Rather, it adapts received forms and structures with a more adventurous harmonic approach and a greater use of dissonance in individual lines.

The first movement starts with what I call “the first stones rolling downhill” – this tumbling motive generates the principal theme. The second theme provides lyrical contrast. The themes are developed in the middle and during the cadenza. There is no break between the first movement and the elegiac second movement. The third and final movement makes us question how we hear simple versus compound subdivisions rhythmically.

  5. Concerto for Tuba

    Composer: McMillan, Benjamin
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Tuba
    Genre: Contemporary

    with Piano

This work was commissioned by Timothy Northcut in honor of Winston Morris, professor of tuba and euphonium at Tennessee Tech University since 1967. Among many others, his former students—both Tim and I included—call him a mentor, friend, and genuine hero to the tuba-euphonium world. Anyone who’s met Winston knows that he’s a larger-than-life character, and our goal was to capture a snapshot of that character within the piece.

The first movementRWM, is constructed from a rhythmic motive that forms the basis of the entire work: 1/4 note followed by 4 1/8 notes

This motive, based on the name ‘R. Winston Morris’, becomes the driving force throughout the work, acting as a musical anchor point. The entrance of the solo tuba introduces the main musical theme that goes on to form much of the melodic material. Conceptually, the first movement represents a day in September of 1967 as Morris began his career at Tennessee Tech University. Beginning with a gentle, noble theme, the mood quickly builds and shifts into an energetic and sometimes whimsical whirlwind. The end of the movement relentlessly hammers out the motive—a tribute to Winston’s unrelenting musical drive. This abruptly shifts with the final note, moving seamlessly into the second movement.

The second movementSweet Steel, is dedicated in loving memory to Barbara “Bobbie” Morris. Although the tone is very dark and brooding, it’s ultimately a love song by the soloist, journeying through the stages of grief. From the darkness a second theme, hopeful and uplifting, rises to a heartfelt climax.

The final movementCookevegas, is a tongue-in-cheek reference to Cookeville, TN, home of Winston and Tennessee Tech University. His love of jazz is a major influence on this hectic, jazzy trip through the small Southern city. A return of the driving ‘RWM’ motive from the first movement brings the concerto to its finale.

Recording is from the premiere with the U.S. Army Band:

  8. Dark Matter

    Composer: Kirby, Benedict
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Tuba
    Genre: Contemporary

    with Piano

Dark Matter - Petite Concertante for Tuba and Piano is a musical meditation on the metaphorical and literal connotations that can be derived from the title words.  The music does have three distinct sections which are woven together to form a sort of triple entendre of meaning.  They are book-ended by “home” thematic material.

The first of the three sections, Moderato - bar 39, is meant to imply an “official” seriousness of tone with a developed and dialoguing theme between the soloist and accompaniment.  The second section, Doloroso - bar 89, is meant to be played out in quite a sombre context as if to amplify the intent of the previous section and go deeper into it.  This mood is eventually relieved as the piece opens up suggesting new possibilities to come.  The third section, Allegro - bar 153, sheds the sombre qualities and takes off to give us a more interstellar perspective.  The intent here is to celebrate the phenomenal astronomical research concerning the make-up of the universe - in particular that 70% of the material out there that we can’t see but nonetheless has quite a dramatic effect on how everything else (solar systems, galaxies, black holes, etc.) behave!  There is one quasi-literal illusion to throwing a switch on a super collider built into the music (bars 224-226) - though this composer confesses never actually having heard one! The music finally finds itself laced with minimalism garnished with coloristic effects and a soaring tuba part as it returns to a transformed version of the opening material.  The final flourish reminds us of the scope of this petite concertante.

This music was first performed on March 22, 2013 by the composer as soloist and the Washington State University Wind Ensemble directed by Dan Pham during the 2013 I.T.E.A. Northwest Regional Tuba & Euphonium Conference.

  10. For the Children

    Composer: York, Barbara
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Tuba
    Genre: Contemporary

    with Piano

This story was written for my friend Hiroaki Shiomi about his love for his children.

    Here is the story:

It is getting close to bedtime. We see the children. They are so sweet and beautiful. The mother takes charge and starts to make sure that they do everything they need to do before bed. They pick up their toys, wash their hands and faces, brush their teeth, start to read a story etc., etc., and everything is very calm. They are even getting more tired and sleepy. Then Daddy comes in and he wants to play! He picks them up and plays with them, making them laugh and laugh. The children and Daddy run around together, laughing, playing and being silly. Before long the children become so tired that they cannot play anymore. Daddy and Mommy put them to bed together and they fall asleep while their parents watch. Together they are perfect parents and love their children in every way.

  11. Four Psalms

    Composer: Liang, Wan-Yun
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Tuba
    Genre: Contemporary

    with Piano

This suite contains four movements that describe the special characteristics of a year’s four seasons. After reading poetry about nature and the changing seasons, the composer brought the poems to life through her music.

    I. Autumn: The long and lyrical melody played by the soloist is accompanied by a repeated pattern from the piano. This symbolizes the dropping and rustling of the leaves from the wind in autumn.

II. Winter: The intense and fast passages, played by both the soloist and pianist, depict a fierce wind sweeping in the cold winter.

III. Spring: A warm, relaxing melody on top of a pastoral rhythmic pattern proclaims a new season is arriving. In the middle section of this movement, both players imitate singing birds. Although the melody is soft and warm, we can hear contrasting emotional changes that reflect the unstable weather in spring time.

IV. Summer: Passion, energy, and activity are all prevalent in summer. The composer uses a tango style to portray these concepts. The second main melody gives the image of a fireworks show in the summer night.

  12. Hades (Hades: God of the Underworld)

    Composer: Lester, Ian
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Tuba
    Genre: Contemporary

with Piano and for Bass or Contra Tuba:

The winner of the 2017 Pershing’s Own U.S. Army Band Composition Competition, Sonata for Tuba “Hades God of the Underworld” was inspired by a friend’s request to “write something low” for tuba. Instead of utilizing the lower tessitura of the instrument as one would expect, I warped this idea of lowness by using Hades the Greek God of the underworld as the basis for this programmatic work, with the idea that this underworld is the lowest imaginable realm. A stylistic change and a new aspect of Hades characterizes each movement. The first movement “Hades Rising” depicts the Greek God emerging from the underworld to wreak havoc. The second movement “The Unseen One” is one of a few translations of “Hades” and contains a simple, yet beautiful melody in the solo line. The third movement “Dance of the Dead” is creates a twisted, ominous atmosphere heavily inspired by Franz Schubert’s Erlkönig. The final movement “Wrath of Hades” displays the catastrophic capabilities of the God by showcasing both the soloist and pianist in an aggressive finale.

  14. HVATI

    Composer: Clearfield, Andrea
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Tuba
    Genre: Contemporary

    with Piano

HVATI was commissioned by acclaimed Norwegian hornist Froydis Ree Wekre for the renowned Norwegian tuba soloist Øystein Baadsvik. The title is Old Norse for "motivator" or "catalyst". This work was inspired by "hvati" with its vigorous energy and stimuli; instruments initiate movement and change. The piece was also informed by having had the special opportunity to meet with Øystein in Trondheim, Norway, thanks to Froydis Ree Wekre.

The form is a loose ABA structure containing several primary themes that undergo variation and spark propulsive rhythms. A central lyrical section provides a momentary calm; references to earlier material eventually gain momentum and propel the work forward to its close.

The composer wishes to thank Froydis Ree Wekre for her generosity and the Helene Wurlitzer Foundation of New Mexico for providing invaluable time and space to compose this work.

In the keys of Eb major and C minor, which are very friendly to the BBb Tuba, this is a fun piece for an emerging tuba player.  It was written for a 6th grade tuba student who is also a very good basketball player and also loves riding horses in rodeos.  She does everything with "Intensity" thus the title.
