“When I am laid in earth”, or Dido’s Lament, is from Henry Purcell’s opera Dido and Aeneas. It is an extremely well-known aria that is used in many music history and theory text books as an example of basso ostinato. The lament is sung in the opera as Dido prepares for her death.

  3. Do Not Enter

    Composer: Cohen, Robert S.
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Tuba
    Genre: Contemporary

    with Piano

    From the composer:

While on a recent trip to Vienna, I travelled to locations where Beethoven was supposedly inspired to write his Sixth Symphony (the Pastoral). I thought to myself that one could see how all this beautiful nature would inspire such a wonderfully optimistic piece of music. But I wondered what would have happened if one day, while he was on one of his walks, he came upon a path leading into the woods with a sign that proclaimed “Do Not Enter” written on it. Being Beethoven, that probably wouldn’t have stopped him from entering. But this was not the kind of place that would inspire a work with the subtitle “Pastoral”. No, no no… this was a far darker and more mysterious landscape. One could only imagine what would have come from the Mater’s pen had this been his inspiration. Now: it was mine.

  4. Downloadable - 3 Episodes for Tuba and Piano

    Composer: Berry, Andrew
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Tuba
    Genre: Folk music
with Piano; This is Andrew Berry’s first completed composition for the two instruments. Though it primarily features the tubist as the solo voice, the pianist plays an important role both melodically and harmonically, truly making the composition a piece of chamber music. Each of the three episodes are entirely “absolute” music. While there is no programmatic inspiration behind the piece, there is melodic and harmonic continuity among the three episodes that allow the performers to tell their own story in the larger context of the piece. Episode I is primarily composed of a-symmetric meters (5/4 and 7/8) with subdivision groupings that are often changing. Along with the jazz-inspired rhythms, this effect creates an imbalance of time that is truly never resolved in the entirety of the movement. Episode II is much like a fantasy, with melodic ideas flowing naturally between the two performers without focusing too heavily on the previous material. The episode is divided into three main sections, each with its own individual mood and pacing. Episode III is the final movement of the piece and acts as a realization of the material from the previous movements. The changing subdivisions in the asymmetric meters are still present, however the melodic material is much more tonal and conclusive in its cadences. Energy and drama build up to the final minute of the piece, where a calm reminiscence of the piece’s opening material transitions into a beautiful final melody from the tubist and conclusion of epic proportions from both performers. 3 Episodes for Tuba and Piano was premiered by Nick Collins (tuba) and Dr. Eric Jenkins (piano) on April 25th, 2021 during Nick’s senior tuba recital at Kennesaw State University. 5. Downloadable - Doubles

    Composer: Revis, Samuel
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Tuba
    Genre: Contemporary
with Piano; Doubles was composed in 2018 and is intended to be performable on either Contra-bass or Bass tuba. The piece contrasts a slightly sad, sweet melody in the 3/4 sections with the jovial, bouncing lines of the 3/8 sections. The piano part in Doubles is also extremely important and frequently engages in a call and response with the melody in the tuba. Doubles is dedicated to the memory of Barbara York as a thank you for the assistance she joyfully gave me in while I was working on the piece. Learn More

  10. Elegy

    Composer: Madden, Edward J.
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Tuba
    Genre: Contemporary

    with Piano

Elegy (a mournful lament, poem or song for a dead person) was composed in memory of Taylor Roland, a wonderful, gentle, and much admired man who played tuba with the Boston University Alumni Concert Band and who died suddenly while only in his mid-forties.

His passing was particularly sad since he had just been married the week before he died. Members of the band and I as conductor wanted to acknowledge him in some special way; this composition was the result. It was first performed by the BU Alumni Band and with Taylor?s tearful widow in the audience.

The tuba itself, like other deep bass instruments, is usually not known or regarded as an instrument with an outstanding capacity for great lyrical abilities as a solo instrument, especially when compared to instruments like the ?cello, violin, or any of the other upper voiced string or wind instruments. Yet a fine player who has the capacity for rich melodic playing can prove that the instrument itself is capable of rich expression. That stated, this work in performance can be the very poignant moment it is intended to convey.

Alternate Euphonium or Trombone solo parts provided.

  13. Endorphins

    Composer: Grant, James
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Tuba
    Genre: Contemporary

    with Piano

“Endorphins” is the last of four works commissioned by and dedicated to 78 adventure-seeking tubists representing 30 states and three countries, who fearlessly joined the 2001 Solstice/Equinox Commissioning Consortium to commission James Grant to write four new recital pieces. As each Solstice and Equinox approached during the year 2001, a new piece was sent out to the participants. All four pieces (Stuff, High Autumn, Just a Thought and Endorphins) now exist in multiple versions for orchestral and band instruments and are programmed frequently at conferences and on student and faculty recitals throughout the year. Endorphins is marked “aerobic” and features, in its middle section, a recap of principal themes from the first three recital pieces in the set, as well as a brief yet dramatic cadenza for the tuba.
