    Genre: Contemporary

    EETT and rhythm section

Brink, by Daniel Kramer is a one-movement work for Tuba-Euphonium Quartet. Kramer writes, “Brink derives its name from its programmatic nature. The piece slowly builds tension utilizing rhythmic ostinati and a sense of impending critical mass, delayed momentarily by a brief, contrasting interlude.”

    Genre: Contemporary

Many of Adam’s compositions and arrangements was put together for the River Bottom quartet, which is Baritone/Euphonium quartet made up of musicians from the Rier City Brass Band of Pittsburgh, PA. It is an acoustic take on the piece, incorporating on the fly percussion such as egg shakers and hand drumming on the horns.” – Ryan McGeorge

  6. Chiapas

Composer: Levy, Hank Arranger: McGeorge, Ryan
    Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
    Genre: Jazz

    EETT

“Originally composed for big band, this was the first piece of Hank Levy’s to ever be recorded by the famous Stan Kenton Band. It appears on their “LIVE at the Redlands” record, and presumably as a result of that recording, became one of Mr. Levy’s most famous works. It is a bossa-nova in 5/4 time that develops into a 5/4 double time rock feel. This arrangement stays very true to the original and features solos in the 1st tuba and 2nd euphonium parts.”

  7. Chickenyard Social

Composer: Hooper, Les Arranger: McGeorge, Ryan
    Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
    Genre: Jazz

    EETT and rhythm section

    From the arranger:

Originally written for big band, Chickenyard Social is a funk interpretation of the sounds you might hear at, well…a chickenyard social. The rhythmic figures throughout the tune sound like musical chicken clucks and calls. Although it is not widely known in the big band world, this tune has turned into a cult standard at the University of North Texas where it continues to be performed by the numerous Lab Bands on a regular basis.

  8. Concerto in D Major

Composer: Bach, Johan Sebastian Arranger: Adler-Mckean, Jack
    Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
    Genre: Baroque

Arranger Jack Adler-McKean says, “This concerto originally forms part of L’Estro Armonico (‘Harmonic Inspiration’), a collection of concerti grossi written by Vivaldi in 1711 described by many as amongst the most important and influential instrumental works of the period. This is perhaps why it is one of several concerti that Bach chose to arrange for the harpsichord, and also why it is now just as famous as his own original concerti for the instrument. The work came to the attention of the brass playing world after an arrangement was made for German Brass by their expert piccolo trumpet player Matthias Hofs. Whilst not being directly based on his transcription, this arrangement certainly retains a virtuosic character. Technical and stylistic challenges create a demanding piece of music, but the end product will be highly impressive; a Baroque masterpiece that will undoubtedly entertain players and audiences alike.”

    Genre: Contemporary

    EETT

Written for and premiered by the Henderson State University tuba choir, Convalescence is a very energetic piece that is a lot of fun for the performers and the audience. 10. El Bosque Verde

Composer: Gomez, Alice Arranger: Adler-Mckean, Jack
    Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
    Genre: Contemporary

El Bosque Verde (The Green Forest) was written for the Junction Tuba Quartet in April 2001. This piece is an imaginative journey through the equatorial forest area between west to east Africa. The lower brass instruments represent indigenous end-blown horns used by the BaMbuti Pygmies in their music praising the living forest. The composition imitates natural sounds that one may hear while walking through the forest, such as the rustling of trees, insects singing, and the sounds of nightfall. African musical techniques employed are interlocking parts, ostinatos, hocketing, and polyrhythmic melodic lines.

  11. Endgame

    Composer: Grant, James
    Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
    Genre: Contemporary

Composer James Grant says, “Endgame was intended to be the third and final movement of tba4tet, a work commissioned by a consortium of 48 participants made up of individuals and tuba-euphonium quartets. This music stands on its own as a three-and-a-half minute virtuoso romp for tuba-euphonium quartet – a piece that is probably best put at the end, not at the beginning of the program. Endgame, marked ‘Giving it all you’ve got’, is a tour de force display of syncopation, somewhat eccentric meters, frantic double-tonguing, and a brief episode of pagan raunch (whatever that is), all supported by a brutally relentless second tuba bass line that views oxygen to be of no importance whatsoever. Endgame is dedicated with thanks to Matt Tropman, Kelly Thomas, Mark Nelson and Don Harry, who premiered the work at the 2008 ITEC in Cincinnati, OH.”

  12. Excursions

    Composer: Guardia Jr., Alejandro
    Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
    Genre: Contemporary

    EETT

Composer Alejandro Guardia Jr. says, “Excursions is an adventure through rugged musical terrain for tuba quartet. It is written in three movements. the first is a rocky and rugged Allegro that creates an uneven energetic path for the audience and performers to trek through. The second movement is very luch and introspective, reminiscent of sitting back and looking at the stars at night and reflecting on the life you are temporarily separated from. The thid movement evokes the sensation of fleeing in panic. Overall, this piece shows off the ensemble’s musical muscle with many passages that require a high level of control in dynamics, range and technicality, and is as much of an adventure for the performers as it is for the audience.”

    EETT

Fanfare and Fantasy in Eb Minor for Tuba-Euphonium Quartet was composed in 2009 by Daniel Kramer for the Western Michigan University Tuba-Euphonium Studio. 14. Fon-Fon: Tango

Composer: Nazareth, Ernesto Arranger: Brown, Dan
    Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
    Genre: Brazilian

    EETT

“I first heard Fon-fon (onomatopoeia for the sound of car horns) while I was a student in Pennsylvania. While I listened to it, I knew that it would work well for low brass instruments and when Dr. Thomas told me about the Eufonix recording project, I knew that this piece would be perfect for the artists on that recording. This light-hearted tango is reminiscent of ragtime piano music in its multi-sectional construction, but it also retains its Brazilian character through the “groove” that is established at the beginning of the piece in the fourth part. Although Eufonix recorded this piece using four euphoniums, it is suitable for multiple combinations of bass clef instruments.” – Dan Brown, arranger of Fon-Fon: Tango for tuba-euphonium quartet, composed by Ernesto Nazareth.

  15. Footprints in the Snow

Composer: Debussy, Claude Arranger: Carlone, Christopher
    Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
    Genre: Romantic

    EETT

Footprints in the Snow is a delicate piece which rarely brings to mind the thought of the tempestuous low brass quartet. Successful performance of such a piece requires a light touch, uniformity, and clear tone. Mark use of space for breaths. The third part may be played on either tuba or euphonium and is most commonly performed on Tuba in F.

  16. Furious Apis

    Composer: McMillan, Benjamin
    Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
    Genre: Contemporary

Originally titled “War in the Hive”, Furious Apis depicts what I imagine as a conflict between bees (apis being Latin for bee) and hornets might be like. Though not strictly programmatic, it contains a number of themes that may represent various sides in the imaginary battle. It’s a somewhat challenging piece for a group to perform due to the constant flurrying lines bouncing around the parts. The piece was first performed in 2013 at the annual Spring Tubafest at TTU, and was recently recorded by the Eufonix Quartet on their third album.

  17. Girl with the Flaxen Hair, The

Composer: Debussy, Claude Arranger: Carlone, Christopher
    Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
    Genre: Romantic

    EETT

    From the arranger:

Claude Debussy is considered a huge influence in the development of early 20th century music. Having studied in the Paris Conservatory at a very young age he was able to pursue composition and embody the progression of French compositions and tonality for the late romantic era. He was considered an impressionist composer, who uses timbre as the color for his musical paintings. Even though Debussy only used a solo keyboard for most of his Preludes, he is considered to have painted a picture using new and unique tonalities and chord progressions.

The Girl with the Flaxen Hair is a short but charming prelude based on a poem by Charles Marie Rene Leconte de Lisle. It is one of the most popular of works in Debussy’s First Book of Preludes. The melody is based upon the delicate arpeggio of a minor seventh chord. After landing on the tonic it builds to the IV and then gracefully falls using parallel fourths and fifths back to a quiet tonic.

  18. Homage

    Composer: Grant, James
    Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
    Genre: Contemporary
At the request of the dynamic Eufonix Quartet (Danny Helseth, Aaron Tindall, Kelly Thomas, Patrick Stuckemeyer), I composed Homage for premiere at the 2015 Northeast Regional Tuba Euphonium Conference, held at Ithaca College in New York. Compositionally, my intention was to capitalize on the uncanny capacity of the four musicians of Eufonix to match tone color and nuance, always the mark of a gifted ensemble. Homage unfolds as a simple memory of respect, admiration, affection and thanks. Set in a timeless ebb and flow of gently swelling harmonies, an introspective calm emerges as performers and listeners meet in a welcome space of repose. The experience is one of shared ritual, imbued with hope and quiet optimism. Originally scored for quartet of two euphoniums and two tubas, Homage is effective for any combination of low brass instruments. The music takes on exceptional depth and meaning when presented by a large ensemble. Learn More
