  2. Farandole

Composer: Bizet, Georges Arranger: Oliver, Jonathan
    Instrumentation: Octet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
    Genre: Classical

    EEEETTTT

Arranger Jonathan Oliver writes, “In 1872, Bizet completed his music for the play L’Arlesienne, which was written by Alphonse Daudet. The play itself was considered unsuccessful, closing after only 21 performances. However, Bizet’s music from this production has lived on in two separate suites. The Farandole from Act 3 of the play was included in the Suite No. 2, which was created four years after the death of Bizet by his friend Ernest Guiraud, but is normally credited to Bizet. In the play, Bizet takes the idea of a farandole, a dance from southern France, and combines it with a traditional French Christmas carol known as ‘March of the Kings’. This arrangement for tuba ensemble looks to recreate the sound of the two musical ideas working together as one.”

  3. Largo from New World Symphony

Composer: Dvorak, Antonin Arranger: Oliver, Jonathan
    Instrumentation: Sextet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
    Genre: Romantic

    EEETTT

    From the arranger:

Dvorak’s New World Symphony, which is widely considered as his signature work, was composed in 1893 during his time as the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America in New York City. Although Dvorak claims that his music was original in nature, one can hear the influences of American styles of the time throughout his work. In the Largo movement, it has been stated that possible source music that he used included ideas from an Osage Indian song, African-American spirituals, and even the story of Hiawatha from Longfellow. The opening melody, which William Arms Fisher three decades later added words to and named “Goin’ Home”,  continues to be one of the most recognized melodies throughout music. This arrangement was created to recreate the main themes and ideas of the Largo movement and to give the tuba ensemble the opportunity to perform this mainstay of classical literature.

  4. Overture to the Barber of Seville

Composer: Rossini, Gioacchino Arranger: Oliver, Jonathan
Instrumentation: Solo and Tuba Ensemble Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
    Genre: Classical

solo (Euphonium or Tuba) with EEEETTTT

The Overture to Rossini’s Barber of Seville is still considered to this day as one of the most loved and best recognized classical works in the world. This music has been included in many forms of media, including movies, commercials, and of course, cartoons. I wanted to use this well-known music in such a way that it could become a soloist piece with the tuba ensemble in the orchestral role. The provided cadenza is there only as a guideline to what the soloist can really strive for.

This arrangement received its premiere at the Kentucky Music Educators Association Conference in Feb. 2013. It was requested and performed by the Oldham County High School Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble under the direction of Brad Rogers and Chris Schmidt. The tuba soloist for the performance was Chris Combest.

  5. Pas Redouble

Composer: Saint-Saens, Camille Arranger: Oliver, Jonathan
Instrumentation: Octet Instruments: Euphonium, Percussion, Tuba
    Genre: Classical

    EEEETTTT and Percussion

Pas Redouble was written in 1887 by Camille Saint-Saens as a four-hand piano work, but it gained its popularity by the famous concert band work by Arthur Frackenpohl. The tempo of the pas redouble usually varied with the ability of the performer, as well as the wishes of the composer and the customs of the time period. The tempo chosen here, and by Frackenpohl, was to be done between the military cadences of the quick march and the double-quick march. For this arrangement, percussion parts have been included, but they are not necessary for performance purposes.
