12 Easy Duets for Tuba is designed with young or inexperienced players in mind who may have limited or no previous experience with duets or chamber music. Rhythms, ranges and key signatures are limited in order to accommodate the player in adjusting to the concept of playing in harmony, as well as developing mutual cooperation necessary in playing a duet. The selections are in a variety of styles, while avoiding faster tempos that could add difficulty without benefit. While written to help instruct, the duets are intended to be performable. A young player can feel a great sense of accomplishment when performing a new (to the player) kind of music, and duets can feel more “safe” than a solo to a young performer. 4th Avenue Suite is a composition set for three euphoniums and three tubas. Its inspiration comes from a vacation at North Carolina’s Outer Banks when we were staying in a rental house on 4th Avenue. The tunes are derived from a sequence of numbers used to open the digital door lock of the house for that week. The numbers, 3 6 8 2 4 3, are employed by their numerical placement in a musical scale. I thought: “What if; these numbers could be made into a tune (or several)?” The entire suite is not confined to these notes, but the tunes in the movements have grown out of this sequence. To construct several generations from a set of notes seemed enough, so no attempt has been made to relate the movements to events or situations. The movements are subtitled as follows: I. Intrada; II. Intermezzo; III. Minuet; and IV. Finale. The challenge level is Medium to Medium Difficult. All players are utilized in important roles and the composition offers various combinations of featured players, sections with just euphoniums or just tubas, and total ensemble. Learn More

A Stroll Through Mind Gardens depicts an imaginary journey inwards to the

realm of imagination, where thoughts bloom and float by like flower petals on the wind.  Connected by variations on a dance-like ‘strolling’ rhythm, the listener is taken on a colorful and vibrant tour of a vast ‘aural mind garden.’

Written during the autumn of 2019, the work was commissioned by David Saltzman to be premiered at the Northeast Regional Tuba/Euphonium Conference (NERTEC) at Ithaca College. It’s intended to have stately-dance feel that acts as a

musical anchor point for the changing melodies and harmonies, although this rhythm itself also undergoes several variations throughout. The sectional structure of the piece and the transitions between them are written in a way that often flow in and out of one another, similar to a typical stream of thought.

The piece provides a moderate challenge for the performer, demanding an expressive, musical approach, and quick changes of style.

Among the Stately Pines was inspired by the campus of Interlochen Center for the Arts, where I worked part-time during the summer of 2021. Interlochen, both the town and the campus, has a rich history. One of the defining features of Interlochen has been the pines which dot the roadsides, and which help define the hiking trails scattered throughout the area.

This work for euphonium-tuba ensemble attempts to capture the pride, history, nostalgia, and progressive character of the institution of Interlochen Center for the Arts. Beyond its reflection on the campus of ICA, though, it is a reflection on the qualities of those places which lodge themselves in our memories. These places continue to pull us toward them, exerting their magnetism no matter how far we move beyond them.

One might imagine that our minds are forests filled with stately pines, that we continually hike trails which lead us to and from our most treasured memories. This work, then, provides a chance for audiences to lose themselves in the best of their pasts while looking hopefully toward the future. Learn More
