4th Avenue Suite
Composer: Paff, John
Instrumentation: Sextet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryEEETTT4th Avenue Suite is a composition set for three euphoniums and three tubas. Its inspiration comes from a vacation at North Carolina’s Outer Banks when we were staying in a rental house on 4th Avenue. The tunes are derived from a sequence of numbers used to open the digital door lock of the house for that week. The numbers, 3 6 8 2 4 3, are employed by their numerical placement in a musical scale. I thought: “What if; these numbers could be made into a tune (or several)?” The entire suite is not confined to these notes, but the tunes in the movements have grown out of this sequence. To construct several generations from a set of notes seemed enough, so no attempt has been made to relate the movements to events or situations. The movements are subtitled as follows: I. Intrada; II. Intermezzo; III. Minuet; and IV. Finale. The challenge level is Medium to Medium Difficult. All players are utilized in important roles and the composition offers various combinations of featured players, sections with just euphoniums or just tubas, and total ensemble. Learn More

10 Trios for Euphonium and Two Tubas
Composer: Paff, John
Instrumentation: Trio Instruments: Tuba
Genre: Contemporary10 Trios for Euphonium and Two Tubas is a collection of trios in various styles. By utilizing tubas and a euphonium, a greater range is possible than with either instrument alone, while staying with similar tonal properties. All three instruments are integral in the construction of each selection, and each player is given opportunities to shine. The first four selections could be played together as a suite, but any of the ten can stand alone. The difficulty level ranges from medium to medium difficult. Collection of Works for Euphonium and Piano, A
Composer: Mantia, Simone Arranger: Renshaw and Mead
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Euphonium, Piano
Genre: Classical, Contemporary, Theme and Variationwith Piano
Simone Mantia is one of the most important euphonium virtuosi in the history of the instrument. His contributions to the euphonium repertoire are significant. A composer and arranger, Mantia recognized the need to expand the euphonium repertoire and was active in bringing the euphonium from the back of the band to the front of the stage as a solo instrument.
This solo collection presents modern editions of some of the most well-known pieces in Mantia’s repertoire. These editions are based on the materials found in the Simone Mantia Collection, a resource archived in 2009 by Gretchen Renshaw which contains many of Mantia’s musical possessions. Through collaboration with Steven Mead, Renshaw has aimed to correct the errors in the original versions of these pieces and provide editorial suggestions that will aid in exciting performances of these works.
The titles included in this collection are: Believe Me, If All Those Endearing Young Charms, Valse Caprice “Priscilla”, Rio Rita, The Southerner, Solvejg’s Song and Fantasie Originale.

Pomp and Circumstance No. 1
Composer: Elgar, Edward Arranger: Heading, Andrew
Instrumentation: Brass Quintet Instruments: 2 Trumpets, Horn, Trombone and Tuba
Genre: Classical, MarchElgar’s most hated piece – at least the piece that he came to hate – was the trio from this march, known by its more familiar title, “Land of Hope and Glory”. Of course, if Elgar had heard it performed by a brass quintet, he may well have started enjoying it again. Never mind, this piece is an audience favorite, and will really get the trumpets working together.

14 Concert Duets for 2 Tubas or Bass Trombones
Composer: Various Arranger: Self, Jim
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Bass Trombone, Tuba
Genre: Classical2 tubas (or 2 bass trombones)
or tuba/bass trombone with downloadable backing tracks (downloads included for both parts 1 and 2) – recorded by Zach Collins
Concert Duets is a collection of 14 arrangements of works by prominent 18th-century composers, mostly taken from Trio Sonatas. Duet 11 is a Jim Self original work in the Rococo style; and Duets 12, 13 and 14 are arrangements of the three-movements of the Bach Concerto for Two Violins. Included with this edition are play-along recorded tracks by tubist Zach Collins, who also served as editor of the current edition.
I created these duets as Christmas gifts for my tuba playing friends, with the first duet being arranged in 1976. All 14 of the duets are challenging and fun to play and are especially effective as concert pieces.
As a young musician I had the privilege of playing duets with many of the world’s finest tubists including Harvey Phillips, John Fletcher, Bob Pallansch, Chester, Schmitz, Dan Perantoni, Toby Hanks, Ron Bishop, Winston Morris and Tommy Johnson. I learned more about playing music in these duo sessions than from any other musical activity I have ever experienced. Duets are powerful teaching tools for learning and mastering rhythm, phrasing and intonation and for developing overall musicianship.

Jim has produced many solo jazz and classical recordings. His music and recordings are available from Potenza Music and www.jimself.com. Jim Self is a Yamaha Performing Artist.
Zach Collins, editor:
Zach Collins is professor of Tuba and Euphonium at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. In 2019, he released his first solo album, Chronicle. It was recognized with the 2021 ITEA Roger Bobo Award for Excellence in Recording for the best Solo Tuba Album.

Tubas Latinas
Composer: Forte, Aldo
Instrumentation: Quintet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
Genre: Contemporary2 Euphs, 3 Tubas and optional Percussion
TUBAS LATINAS (overture for tuba ensemble) is a one movement work commissioned by Earnest Walls for the Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble, R. Winston Morris, Director, and is dedicated to this outstanding and renown group of musicians. The work was composed between December 1991 and January 1992 on a request by Mr. Morris for a piece to be premiered at the 1992 National M.E.N.C. Convention in New Orleans (April 1992) and later to be performed at the International T.U.B.A. Conference in Lexington, Kentucky (May 1992).
TUBAS LATINAS is scored for 2 Euphonium and 3 Tuba parts along with 2 optional percussion parts (Perc. 1: 2 claves and 2 cowbells, the latter to be mounted on a stand and played with snare drum sticks)(Perc. 2: 2 maracas and tambourine). The composition is approximately 6 minutes in length and contrasts Spanish and latin american musical elements. It consists of 4 sections in a slow-fast-slow-fast format. The first section opens with a slow introduction featuring Euph. 1. in a cantabile Spanish style melody. The second section, which begins at measure 18, consists of bullfight bravura type music which is occasionally interrupted by syncopated jazz rhythms. In section 3, which begins at measure 134, the opening melody of the introduction returns, this time dressed in different garb. A solo Tba. 1. cadenza leads to section 4. This section contrasts with the previous 3 spanish sections since it is in a latin style. This final section, which begins at measure 147, is as long as the previous 3 sections combined. A secondary theme from section 2 (meas. 68-83) is developed in latin style during the second part of section 4 (meas. 175-186 and 216-224). It is also in this section that the optional percussion parts are introduced. All players should ensure that the latin style rhythms are played effortlessly, never hurried or labored.

Metal Music, Op. 122
Composer: Kibbe, Michael
Instrumentation: Brass Quintet Instruments: 2 Trumpets, Horn, Trombone and Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryMichael Kibbe writes about his brass quintet, Metal Music:
This work is my second essay for brass quintet, composed in 1993 and revised in 2009. The four movements are named for differing types of metal from which, historically, the instruments have sometimes been made or veneered. But these movement titles, (Brass, Silver, Copper and Gold) are only points of inspiration. The music itself presents four movements of contrasting tempos and coloration.
