4th Avenue Suite
Composer: Paff, John
Instrumentation: Sextet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryEEETTT4th Avenue Suite is a composition set for three euphoniums and three tubas. Its inspiration comes from a vacation at North Carolina’s Outer Banks when we were staying in a rental house on 4th Avenue. The tunes are derived from a sequence of numbers used to open the digital door lock of the house for that week. The numbers, 3 6 8 2 4 3, are employed by their numerical placement in a musical scale. I thought: “What if; these numbers could be made into a tune (or several)?” The entire suite is not confined to these notes, but the tunes in the movements have grown out of this sequence. To construct several generations from a set of notes seemed enough, so no attempt has been made to relate the movements to events or situations. The movements are subtitled as follows: I. Intrada; II. Intermezzo; III. Minuet; and IV. Finale. The challenge level is Medium to Medium Difficult. All players are utilized in important roles and the composition offers various combinations of featured players, sections with just euphoniums or just tubas, and total ensemble. Learn More

Largo from New World Symphony
Composer: Dvorak, Antonin Arranger: Oliver, Jonathan
Instrumentation: Sextet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
Genre: RomanticEEETTT
From the arranger:
Dvorak’s New World Symphony, which is widely considered as his signature work, was composed in 1893 during his time as the director of the National Conservatory of Music of America in New York City. Although Dvorak claims that his music was original in nature, one can hear the influences of American styles of the time throughout his work. In the Largo movement, it has been stated that possible source music that he used included ideas from an Osage Indian song, African-American spirituals, and even the story of Hiawatha from Longfellow. The opening melody, which William Arms Fisher three decades later added words to and named “Goin’ Home”, continues to be one of the most recognized melodies throughout music. This arrangement was created to recreate the main themes and ideas of the Largo movement and to give the tuba ensemble the opportunity to perform this mainstay of classical literature.

Quartetto Di Notte
Composer: Cross, Steven
Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryFor Tuba Quartet (EETT), "Quartetto Di Notte" is a one-movement work in the traditional sonata-allegro form with a slow introduction. I originally planned to make this a multi-movement work, but felt the first movement could stand very nicely on its own. The first three notes of the intro forms the motif on which the entire work is based. With the leading tone tendencies of the second note of the motif, this introduction, styled like a fugue, modulates constantly. Ever tonal in its construction, it travels through many keys, starting in C Minor, and at its most extreme point, B Major, before ending up in G Minor. A held G7 chord brings us to the exposition, which also begins in C Minor. The exposition begins with more development of the initial three-note motif, along with two new motifs, two eighth notes and a quarter note; and a quarter, four eights and another quarter note. These permeate the first theme until we change to the key of G Major where a new, more lyrical theme appears. This is played at first, with a simple bass line, but on its repeat, is accompanied by two countermelodies. The development section offers more motivic development, and then at letter G, we have a contrapuntal segment where all of the rhythmic themes are woven together. This brings us to a chorale-like portion where the second theme is developed more fully. The recap ensues, but now we are in the key of Eb Minor. The second theme reappears in the key of Bb Major and a new countermelody to this makes its appearance. After a short pause, we enter into the rousing coda where the piece finishes off in the sprightly key of Eb Major utilizing all of the pieces premier motifs.

Nomadic Dances
Composer: McMillan, Benjamin
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Tubawith Piano; Harmonically, this was a gateway composition for me that expanded my horizons in terms of learning to work more with dissonance and finding what I like to hear. I can't tell you what mode or modes it's in—I frankly don't care. The harmonic language developed slowly and was guided by ear into its final form. The minor 2nd motion, initially between F and G-flat, and the tritone down to C served as the major reference points for the harmonic language.
The title is probably fairly self-explanatory. I haven't been a stranger to the use of multi-meter in my writing, but this one really takes the cake for the sheer amount of meter changes. Where I had used the term "kaleidoscopic" before to describe constantly-shifting meter, this time I went with nomadic—always on the move. This applies as much to the rhythm as it does the changing meters and key centers.
