Der Hirt auf dem Felsen, or The Shepherd on the Rock, is a lied originally for soprano, clarinet and piano by Franz Schubert. It was written for Pauline Anna Milder-Hauptmann, a friend of the composer’s, who requested a piece from Schubert that would allow her to show off her versatility as a performer. The lyrics are taken from two poets, Wilhelm Muller and August Varnhagen von Ense. This version arranges both the soprano and the clarinet parts for tubas.

GOOD LIPS: Warm-ups, Daily Routines, and Etudes for Brass Players

This book is born out of my experience teaching economically disadvantaged folk and wanting there to be a better way of getting my students materials than stealing the work of my colleagues by making photocopies of singular exercises out of books. We, as teachers and students, have all had books that were 50-300 pages long that we would like our students to own, but do not ask them to purchase because they might only use 3-20 pages. My students, generally, cannot afford to buy every book and musicians cannot afford to give away their work for free. This book is not meant to be exhaustive or original in content. It is meant to meant to be a survey of some of the work needed to become one of “the world’s best,” meant to inspire a student to purchase books that are more in depth on the concepts presented, and most of all, meant to give a student one book that touches on most skills needed in the western art aesthetic.

Chant du Menestral, originally for cello and orchestra, remains one of Glazunov’s most popular works. With long phrases, the tuba plays the part of the minstrel, alternating in ABA form between the melancholy opening and the more upbeat middle section.

The Queen of the Night Aria, from Le Nozze di Figaro, is most frequently heard on flute as a popular recital piece, but it has been performed on nearly every instrument. It is perhaps the most well-known of all opera arias, with a memorable melody, virtuosic technique and high range.

Tournament Galop, originally for piano, is arranged here for tuba-euphonium quartet. Written as a showpiece for the composer, the frequent galloping figures remind listeners of horses racing, and is inspired by Jan Mazeppa, who was lashed to a horse that was sent galloping until the horse collapsed from exhaustion.

“When I am laid in earth”, or Dido’s Lament, is from Henry Purcell’s opera Dido and Aeneas. It is an extremely well-known aria that is used in many music history and theory text books as an example of basso ostinato. The lament is sung in the opera as Dido prepares for her death.
