Three Dances
Composer: Zugger, Thomas
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Bassoon, Clarinet, Trombone
Genre: ContemporaryIn 3 movements : Jazz Waltz, Slow Dance, and Irish Jig. In this charming and entertaining work the composer envisions two people dancing with one another. The "lead" in each dance is shared in alternation between the two instrumentalists. The first movement, Jazz Waltz, is in ABA form with the middle section being a waltz in 4/4. The melody is introduced by the bassoon (or trombone) and is passed back and forth throughout. In the enchanting second movement, Slow Dance, the musical material undergoes continuous development with the equality of the parts being paramount. The energetic final movement, Irish Jig, opens with an intriguing mixed meter section which leads to the rousing jig. It concludes with an exciting and frenzied accelerando and fugue. This work is fun to perform and has a great audience appeal! The clarinet and trombone version is recorded on the CD Dances and Dreams [Mark Records 8290-MCD] Learn MoreUpdate Required To play the media you will need to either update your browser to a recent version or update your Flash plugin.$16.00 -

Three Moods
Composer: Zugger, Thomas Instruments: Piano, Trombone, Trumpet
Genre: Contemporarywith PianoThree Moods was composed in 2013 as a recital piece for undergraduate and graduate trombone and trumpet students. The inspiration for the work is the moods that I experience in the compositional process. The first movement is the beginning of the process. Intense thought, which is often times in small segments, is musically demonstrated through the passing of small motives to each of the three performers. The piano in this movement acts as a third solo instrument. The second movement portrays the emotion of nearing the conclusion of the process. I can see where the piece will end but cannot as yet “hear” it. I am on the brink but cannot quite see the finish line. The movement is a combination of a 12 tone row in both the trombone and trumpet parts set over a piano ostinato that is both haunting and powerful. The last movement is of course the thrill of completion and the first performance. A 16th note ascending line is the picture of the rising emotion of celebration. The middle of the movement employs two short fugues which propel it back to the A theme followed by a short coda at the conclusion. Enjoy! Learn More

A Prayer and Wings
Composer: Zugger, Thomas
Instrumentation: Solo Instruments: Trombone
Genre: ContemporaryunaccompaniedA Prayer and Wings was composed in late fall 2008 after a trip to the outer banks of North Carolina and a visit to the Wright Brothers monument in Kitty Hawk. Seeing the memorial drew me to think of those first pioneers of flight, and the fear that they must have had to overcome to attempt to soar toward the horizon.
The first movement, Canto, is a prayer for the airmen, lead by the cantor. It should be performed facing the open piano (full stick) with the bell pointed at the strings. The cantor sings the prayer and then the congregation replies. In this instance, the congregation is not only the more complex rhythms, symbolizing the inaccurate entrances of many people, but also the echo created by the passive piano. The performer may improvise some of the rhythms to create even more echo. The second movement, Wings, is the actual flight, and should be performed facing the audience. The eighth notes are the wind that was the catalyst. Midway through the flight, the airmen begins to recite the prayer to himself (passive piano engaged) and a very slight echo is heard in the distance. Gradually the plane descends back to the ground and mans first flight has occurred. For the pianist, Ped. signifies depressing the sustain pedal, * denotes releasing the pedal. Learn More

Midnight Sounds
Composer: Zugger, Thomas
Instrumentation: Octet Instruments: Trombone
Genre: Contemporary8 partsMidnight Sounds, which subtitled An Alaskan Portrait, was composed in 2008 after traveling to Alaska. The extraordinary scenery Resurrection Bay and Denali National Park was inspiring. The piece is in four sections: introduction, allegro, moderato and allegro/coda. The opening motive is based on the open fourth and fifth interval. That motive is passed throughout the ensemble and is also altered to create the melody of the allegro. Every vista in Alaska is larger than life, space is abundant everywhere. I’ve tried to capture that space and beauty using the most resonant of all instruments! Learn More

In Time
Composer: Zugger, Thomas
Instrumentation: Sextet Instruments: Alto Trombone, Bass Trombone, Trombone
Genre: Contemporary6 parts; In Time was composed January 1st 2007 and premiered later that month by the Capital University Trombone choir at the Indiana IMEA conference. It was composed in honor of my mother Virginia Schwan Zugger who died of cancer July 2006. Her mothers name was Lina McGinty, part of my half Irish heritage. It is an Irish Air composed from memories of the lullaby’s my mother sang to us when we were children.
The lead is actually in trombone one and that voice should drive both the dynamic and the phrasing. Alto trombone is an obbligato line and is good for inexperienced players as it centers around Eb. The work can be performed one on a part without conductor, or with a much larger group with conductor. It is a song of love and loss and should be played with that feeling. Learn More
