Once in a Blue Moon
Composer: Liang, Wan-Yun
Instrumentation: Solo and Wind Band Instruments: Euphonium
Genre: Contemporarywith Wind Band; This piece features varied styles and is a nice challenge for an upper level High School player or College student.
Program notes:
“Once in a Blue Moon” is a concerto for euphonium and wind ensemble written by a young Taiwanese composer, Wan-Yun Liang. According to the composer, this romantic piece is telling a story about “two lovers who coincidentally met, fell in love and watched the moon under the moonlight.” This piece consists of four sections without break. The music begins with a lovely main theme played by the soloist. This first section, marked Adagio, is in the style of the blues. It is followed by a fast section and a tango style third section. After a brief cadenza, the main theme comes back in a dance tempo. In this final section, the clarinet section will play the counter melody when the soloist presents the main melody. After that, trumpets and saxophones players will play the main tune while the counter melody will be played by the soloist. This represents the two lovers dancing happily under the moon.
This piece was premiered by the Euphonium player, Tzu-Hsiang Lin, and Taipei Symphonic Band in January 14th 2018, under the direction of Dr. Po-Yuan Ku.
This music has been selected as 2018 Taiwan Tuba Euphonium Competition Set Piece.

Where Leaves and Birds a Music Spin
Composer: McMillan, Benjamin
Instrumentation: Duet and Piano Instruments: Flute, Piano, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryFor Flute/Piccolo, Tuba and Piano
From the composer:
“Where Leaves And Birds A Music Spin” consists of six short movements, each loosely depicting a scene in nature.
- Borne On a Great Wind
- And the River Flows Ever Onwards
- Emerson’s Acorn
- Through Dawn Mist, A Doe
- Dauwtrappen
- Lithic Engines
The first scene is a fantasy of being carried on the wind, rushing over the landscape below. The second follows the journey of a river, through winding meandering paths to rapids. The third movement is based on a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson’s essay on History that reads, “The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn.” In the fourth, a scene unfolds of a foggy morning and the appearance of a doe. The word Dauwtrappen comes from Dutch and describes the concept of walking barefoot in the morning grass when the grass is still covered in dew. The final movement imagines the inner workings of the planet, with lithic, or rock and magma, engines driving continents, creating new lands, mountain ranges, as well as the slow destruction and recycling of the old.
Although I have suggested scenes with each title, I don’t intend these to be concrete depictions, and the listener should let their minds wander freely and create their own scenes as the piece progresses.

Among the Stately Pines
Composer: Zegiel, Evan
Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryEETTAmong the Stately Pines was inspired by the campus of Interlochen Center for the Arts, where I worked part-time during the summer of 2021. Interlochen, both the town and the campus, has a rich history. One of the defining features of Interlochen has been the pines which dot the roadsides, and which help define the hiking trails scattered throughout the area.
This work for euphonium-tuba ensemble attempts to capture the pride, history, nostalgia, and progressive character of the institution of Interlochen Center for the Arts. Beyond its reflection on the campus of ICA, though, it is a reflection on the qualities of those places which lodge themselves in our memories. These places continue to pull us toward them, exerting their magnetism no matter how far we move beyond them.
One might imagine that our minds are forests filled with stately pines, that we continually hike trails which lead us to and from our most treasured memories. This work, then, provides a chance for audiences to lose themselves in the best of their pasts while looking hopefully toward the future. Learn More

Persevere and Rebuild, for the Sun Will Rise Again
Composer: Lester, Ian
Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryPersevere and Rebuild, for the Sun will Rise Again was written for the 2020 ‘When Tuba Come One’ International Composition Competition, where it received an honorable mention and will be recorded on the When Tuba Come One Quartet’s upcoming CD in 2021. Dedicated to all of healthcare workers working on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic, this composition begins with a gorgeous slow section before shifting into faster, more optimistic territory, in which the two top voices are featured in rapid-fire solos. The tubas then provide a brief, thoughtful soli, where a temporarily calm heartbeat can be heard. The work ends with a driving, jubilant finale reminiscent of British brass band and Salvation Army band music. A Prayer and Wings
Composer: Zugger, Thomas
Instrumentation: Solo Instruments: Trombone
Genre: ContemporaryunaccompaniedA Prayer and Wings was composed in late fall 2008 after a trip to the outer banks of North Carolina and a visit to the Wright Brothers monument in Kitty Hawk. Seeing the memorial drew me to think of those first pioneers of flight, and the fear that they must have had to overcome to attempt to soar toward the horizon.
The first movement, Canto, is a prayer for the airmen, lead by the cantor. It should be performed facing the open piano (full stick) with the bell pointed at the strings. The cantor sings the prayer and then the congregation replies. In this instance, the congregation is not only the more complex rhythms, symbolizing the inaccurate entrances of many people, but also the echo created by the passive piano. The performer may improvise some of the rhythms to create even more echo. The second movement, Wings, is the actual flight, and should be performed facing the audience. The eighth notes are the wind that was the catalyst. Midway through the flight, the airmen begins to recite the prayer to himself (passive piano engaged) and a very slight echo is heard in the distance. Gradually the plane descends back to the ground and mans first flight has occurred. For the pianist, Ped. signifies depressing the sustain pedal, * denotes releasing the pedal. Learn More
