Low Blow
Composer: Gulino, Frank
Instrumentation: Solo Instruments: Bass Trombone, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryIn 2018, Spanish bass and contrabass trombonist Javier Colomer will record a new album that includes works for trombone and organ as well as for unaccompanied bass and contrabass trombones. The music on this disc spans four centuries, from Palestrina and Gabrielli through Handel, Schubert, and Faure, among others. The newest piece on the album – a work for unaccompanied contrabass trombone by American composer Frank Gulino – had not been completed at the time
Javier Colomer is an internationally renowned bass and contrabass trombone soloist and teacher who has given recitals and master classes across the globe for more than 25 years. During that time, Javier has performed with orchestras and wind bands both as an ensemble musician and concerto soloist, and presented masterclasses to over a thousand students from some of the world's leading conservatories and universities. He is a past member of the ITA Board of Advisors and also authored “The World of The Contrabass Trombone,” the first comprehensive method book for that instrument. Javier's advocacy of the contrabass trombone as a solo instrument is a natural extension of his experience as a performer and pedagogue, and he continues to regularly commission and premiere new works for the bass and contrabass trombones. Slow Machines Moving at a Surprisingly Fast Pace
Composer: Jungman, Logan
Instrumentation: Sextet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryEETTTT
“Slow Machines Moving at a Surprisingly Fast Pace” was commissioned by Brielan Andersen, DMA in Tuba Performance, for the University of Missouri-Kansas City Tuba-Euphonium Ensemble, under the direction of Thomas G. Stein. This piece was premiered on June 1st, 2016 at the 2016 International Tuba Euphonium Conference held in Knoxville, Tennessee at the University of Tennessee. This piece, along with many other compositions for tuba, is also featured on Brielan’s CD “Music for Tuba and Friends”."Slow Machines Moving at a Surprisingly Fast Pace” is a piece that is written for tuba-euphonium ensemble. The piece is based on the stereotype that these low brass instruments can’t play quite as swiftly and gracefully as a violin, flute, or something along those lines; however, to prove this stereotype wrong, these “machines” can, and do, move at a surprisingly fast pace. The piece features two different melodies that can be heard throughout the entire piece, usually being played by two instruments, while the other instruments have a steady, almost machine-like rhythmic material. To fit into Brielan’s broad theme of “American” for her CD, I decided to go down the route of minimalism, which the minimalist music movement began in the west coast of America, the music is similar to that of Steve Reich with phasing between the instruments, and the title is a bit of a parody off of John Adam’s “Short Ride in a Fast Machine”.Learn MoreUpdate Required To play the media you will need to either update your browser to a recent version or update your Flash plugin. From $22.00

Gravity
Composer: Writer, Justin
Instrumentation: Sextet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryGravity for tuba ensemble (EEETTT) is a musical rendition of what goes up must come down. This rhythmically aggressive work features the attacking quality of the tuba through the use of hard articulations and fast double tonguing. Slight pause from the onslaught of motivic variation comes in the form of a five-part fugal section that brings “gravity” to its lowest point. The work ends with one final variation where high notes attempt to resist the force of gravity.

Concerto for Tuba
Composer: McMillan, Benjamin
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Tuba
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano
This work was commissioned by Timothy Northcut in honor of Winston Morris, professor of tuba and euphonium at Tennessee Tech University since 1967. Among many others, his former students—both Tim and I included—call him a mentor, friend, and genuine hero to the tuba-euphonium world. Anyone who’s met Winston knows that he’s a larger-than-life character, and our goal was to capture a snapshot of that character within the piece.
The first movement, RWM, is constructed from a rhythmic motive that forms the basis of the entire work: 1/4 note followed by 4 1/8 notes
This motive, based on the name ‘R. Winston Morris’, becomes the driving force throughout the work, acting as a musical anchor point. The entrance of the solo tuba introduces the main musical theme that goes on to form much of the melodic material. Conceptually, the first movement represents a day in September of 1967 as Morris began his career at Tennessee Tech University. Beginning with a gentle, noble theme, the mood quickly builds and shifts into an energetic and sometimes whimsical whirlwind. The end of the movement relentlessly hammers out the motive—a tribute to Winston’s unrelenting musical drive. This abruptly shifts with the final note, moving seamlessly into the second movement.
The second movement, Sweet Steel, is dedicated in loving memory to Barbara “Bobbie” Morris. Although the tone is very dark and brooding, it’s ultimately a love song by the soloist, journeying through the stages of grief. From the darkness a second theme, hopeful and uplifting, rises to a heartfelt climax.
The final movement, Cookevegas, is a tongue-in-cheek reference to Cookeville, TN, home of Winston and Tennessee Tech University. His love of jazz is a major influence on this hectic, jazzy trip through the small Southern city. A return of the driving ‘RWM’ motive from the first movement brings the concerto to its finale.
Recording is from the premiere with the U.S. Army Band:

Onwards and Upwards
Composer: Gulino, Frank
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Tuba
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano:
In early 2017, Dr. Chris Combest approached me about writing a new piece for tuba and piano to be premiered at the 2018 U.S. Army Band Tuba-Euphonium Workshop, where Chris had been invited to perform as a guest soloist. As Chris and I discussed the different directions this new piece could take, one idea swiftly broke away from the pack and excited both of us very much.
"Onwards and upwards" is a favorite saying of Dr. Jerry Young, longtime professor of music at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, where he taught tuba and euphonium, among other things, from 1983 until 2016. In addition to being a friend and mentor to generations of low brass players, Jerry has enjoyed a multifaceted career as a soloist, clinician, lecturer, adjudicator, and additionally served as President of the International Tuba Euphonium Association (ITEA) and as Editor in Chief of the ITEA Journal. Chris expressed a desire to dedicate a new piece to Jerry, one that embodied the energy and optimism of this revered pedagogue and his "onwards and upwards" mantra. Over the course of his remarkable career, Jerry has been a profound influence on so many tuba players, and it is my absolute privilege to dedicate this new work to Dr. Jerry Young. Onwards and upwards!

The Battle At Daylight
Composer: Liang, Wan-Yun
Instrumentation: Sextet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryEEETTT “The Battle at Daylight” was commissioned by S-Master Low Brass Ensemble and premiered on Feb. 16, 2019. This piece was composed for young Euphonium and Tuba players. The main theme is presented at the beginning by a solo Euphonium declaring the break of dawn. This piece consists of three parts after the prelude. The phrase of “Moderate” presents the main theme and gradually increases the texture entering into the second part which is “Con brio”. This represents the determination to fight for the daylight. The conclusion is the presentation once again of the prelude music and the first main theme, but in a more powerful fashion and concludes with majestic momentum. Kidstuff Protocols
Composer: Kirby, Benedict
Instrumentation: Octet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryEEEETTTT Kidstuff Protocols was written in the spring of 2019 for the University of Montana Tuba and Euphonium Choir as part of their programing for their performance at the 2019 International Tuba and Euphonium Conference held in Iowa City, IA in May of that year. The music is a modern, yet mischievous mashup of 8 references to well known children’s songs - in keeping with that conference’s “Young At Heart Theme. The tunes are separated by connective material meant to provide cohesion to the composition. Each tune iteration has its own unique style and all of them except for The Muffin Man and the cadenza rendering of the “Villa Borghese” should have a sense of high energy regardless of dynamic. Their order of their appearance is as follows: 1) Mary Had a Little Lamb - in hot swing style (with the low tubas serving as percussionists with hi-hat special effects (beat-boxing the vocals into the tuba while crisply slapping the lower right side of the instrument) 2) Camptown Races - partially set as a 3 against 2 hemiola. 3) Nick Nack Paddywack (also known as This Old Man) - set as a brief march. 4) Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star - briefly set in the Lydian mode. 5) Children’s theme from I. Villa Borghese of Respighi’s Pines of Rome - set as a cadenza answer to the euphonium cadenza which precedes it. 6) The Muffin Man - harmonized in barbershop quartet (in this case octet!) style. 7) Row, Row Row Your Boat - set in a polyharmonic march style. 8) Mary Had a Little Lamb - recapitulation as in the beginning with more intensity.
