Little Black Lucille
Composer: Johnson, Howard Arranger: Johnson and Brown
Instrumentation: Quintet Instruments: Bass, Drum Set, Flugelhorn, Piano, Tuba
Genre: JazzFlute, 5 Tubas, Piano, Bass and Drum Set
The name “Little Black Lucille” wasn’t used kindly at first, but in the end my Aunt Lucille, an unloved orphan, built a loving family against the odds.”
- Howard Johnson
This composition is certainly a tribute to the life and struggles of Howard Johnson’s Aunt Lucille. The penny whistle opening and appearance near the end is a great tribute to the textural disjunction of the arrangement and the juxtaposition of the story that unfolds. He has composed a piece that is soulful, powerful, and triumphal.
Howard Johnson’s jazz tuba ensemble is envisioned as a tuba choir-with tubas in F, E flat, CC, and BB flat- that encourages tuba players to learn to play in the upper register. His charts were originally written for his tuba jazz ensemble, Gravity, formed in 1968 with Howard Johnson as solo lead tuba. The charts can in fact be performed with euphoniums; but he formed his group, made his arrangements and developed this specific instrumentation 50 years ago as a statement about tubas and prefers to hear his arrangements played in this configuration, encouraging tuba players to develop the range required. His most important advice is that whatever instrumentation is used, make if fun and find the best jazz rhythm section!

Little Suite for Chubazz
Composer: Adler-Mckean, Jack
Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryAn ensemble as homogeneous as a tuba-euphonium quartet may seem a bizarre choice for an exploration of different musical textures… These three short miniatures (all based upon the same twelve-tone row) demonstrate very different moods by exploiting the wide variety of sonic worlds that are possible with this ensemble. A bell sequence opens the set, overlapping peals emerging and interrupting each other before gradually fading back into the distance. A contrapuntal scherzo begins the next bagatelle; however, a cantus firmus soon negates any long-term rhythmical development. A new world entirely is signaled by the mysterious heterophonic elegy that forms the final movements, a series of timbral effects and extended techniques disguising an otherwise simple theme and variations structure. Certainly a work for the more adventurous ensemble, this piece presents a real test of musicality, technique, but above all, musical imagination.

Onwards and Upwards
Composer: Gulino, Frank
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Tuba
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano:
In early 2017, Dr. Chris Combest approached me about writing a new piece for tuba and piano to be premiered at the 2018 U.S. Army Band Tuba-Euphonium Workshop, where Chris had been invited to perform as a guest soloist. As Chris and I discussed the different directions this new piece could take, one idea swiftly broke away from the pack and excited both of us very much.
"Onwards and upwards" is a favorite saying of Dr. Jerry Young, longtime professor of music at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire, where he taught tuba and euphonium, among other things, from 1983 until 2016. In addition to being a friend and mentor to generations of low brass players, Jerry has enjoyed a multifaceted career as a soloist, clinician, lecturer, adjudicator, and additionally served as President of the International Tuba Euphonium Association (ITEA) and as Editor in Chief of the ITEA Journal. Chris expressed a desire to dedicate a new piece to Jerry, one that embodied the energy and optimism of this revered pedagogue and his "onwards and upwards" mantra. Over the course of his remarkable career, Jerry has been a profound influence on so many tuba players, and it is my absolute privilege to dedicate this new work to Dr. Jerry Young. Onwards and upwards!

One More Dance
Composer: Kellaway, Roger
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Tuba
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano
Roger Kellaway’s unique collaboration and continued friendship with tubist Roger Bobo have led to several standards in the tuba repertoire. His newest work “One More Dance” (2011) was commissioned especially for a recording by twelve of Roger’s former students who wanted to present Maestro Bobo with a special birthday present. Kellaway gladly embraced the idea and wrote a work for tuba and piano very reminiscent of his “Morning Song” but new, fresh, and entirely Roger Kellaway.
One More Dance can be heard on the CD One More Dance by Tom McCaslin

Three for Two (or One or Three)
Composer: Garcia, Antonio
Instrumentation: Solo and Trombone Ensemble Instruments: Euphonium, Trombone
Genre: ContemporaryThree for Two (or One or Three) is a versatile composition for trombone(s) and/or euphonium(s) with optional percussion (bongos, snare drum) on any or all movements.
A 6-8 minute work playable with a tenor-bass “trigger” trombone, challenging for but playable by a college senior. Three for Two teaches jazz stylistic characteristics that are not normally encountered in standard classical solos.
The three movements can be performed entirely or independently, and with variances in instrumentation from solo trombone or euphonium (TC euphonium parts included) to duos including bass trombone or percussion or trios including the same. All notes are playable without a trigger-horn, and the duo version is easier for the brass-performer than the solo version. An optional percussion part includes the highly portable instruments of bongos and snare drum so that staging is easily accomplished for a horn/percussion duo or trio.
The title of the piece refers to the three movements scored for duo, solo, or trio (ordered so within the title since it rhymes with the popular title “Tea for Two”). One can generate fourteen instrumentations of this composition, as indicated on the cover sheet of each part.

Once in a Blue Moon
Composer: Liang, Wan-Yun
Instrumentation: Solo and Wind Band Instruments: Euphonium
Genre: Contemporarywith Wind Band; This piece features varied styles and is a nice challenge for an upper level High School player or College student.
Program notes:
“Once in a Blue Moon” is a concerto for euphonium and wind ensemble written by a young Taiwanese composer, Wan-Yun Liang. According to the composer, this romantic piece is telling a story about “two lovers who coincidentally met, fell in love and watched the moon under the moonlight.” This piece consists of four sections without break. The music begins with a lovely main theme played by the soloist. This first section, marked Adagio, is in the style of the blues. It is followed by a fast section and a tango style third section. After a brief cadenza, the main theme comes back in a dance tempo. In this final section, the clarinet section will play the counter melody when the soloist presents the main melody. After that, trumpets and saxophones players will play the main tune while the counter melody will be played by the soloist. This represents the two lovers dancing happily under the moon.
This piece was premiered by the Euphonium player, Tzu-Hsiang Lin, and Taipei Symphonic Band in January 14th 2018, under the direction of Dr. Po-Yuan Ku.
This music has been selected as 2018 Taiwan Tuba Euphonium Competition Set Piece.
