Journey
Composer: Popp, Harold
Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Trombone
Genre: ContemporaryunaccompaniedThis work is intended to be a free expression of a life journey. Various changes are indicative of the challenges each person faces. The piece should be played as the performer faces individual challenges. It may never be performed the same way twice. Our feelings and attitudes are not in a rut to be followed in identical fashion day by day, month by month. Any performer should feel free to approach the piece as an expression of their inner self at a particular time. The value of the music is not merely notes, but resultant of a momentary response to a thought, an idea, or a grasping of concepts beyond the immediate. Music must be inherent in every life form as each seeks to touch true elements of existence. Enjoy! Learn More

Impromptu
Composer: Duuren, Alex van
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Trombone
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano
Impromptu for Trombone and Piano was written, as the title suggests, rather spontaneously. Classical improvisation has always been a favorite technique of mine; I very much enjoy simply sitting down at the piano and “composing” freely through improvisation, sometimes for up to forty-five minutes or more without a pause. These sessions for me are both personal and musical, but in a seemingly incompatible way, and with different affects. As a personal endeavor, I have always found improvisation to be essentially a meditative exercise for me; after a substantial bout of spontaneous music-making, playing the final note feels like emerging from a blurry and dream-like state. I’ve always enjoyed the markedly improved clarity and focus that I am granted in all my non-musical activities immediately following such an event. However in hindsight of my musical mind, these long sessions of improvisation have always been extremely unsatisfying…I’m not really able to retain any of the musical information which I created. The music that I made, with some choice moments of dictation-worthy value, is not only through-composed but essentially un-replicable. It has, of course, been suggested to me that I record these moments so that I might transcribe them later, however as with most creative things in this world, a true impromptu work requires complete spontaneity; I simply can’t improvise anything of real value on my own command. This is the reasons that I feel lucky to have wrote this piece.
I suppose it was luck of the draw to have a brief stint of enough patience to combine composition with short bursts of improvisation. As both a trombonist and a pianist, I am thankful to have the luxury of improvisational facility on both instruments. The result is that the work is truly a duet, in that both the trombone and piano parts contain “original motives”. It is not the case that the piano part serves to accompany a melody in the trombone, because some music which you hear from the piano came as improvisational ideas before a trombone part was superimposed on top of it. And, of course, the opposite is true as well. Essentially, Impromptu was written like a jigsaw puzzle made of oddly shaped pieces; two jagged and asymmetrical chunks become balanced only when they find each other. I hope you enjoy pulling the pieces apart as much as I enjoyed putting them together.
–Alex van Duuren

Remember?
Composer: Grant, James
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Euphonium, Piano
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano
Scored for euphonium or tuba, with or without piano accompaniment, Remember? was commissioned by the International Tuba-Euphonium Association for all the attendees at the 2014 International Tuba-Euphonium Conference in Bloomington, IN.
Remember? unfolds freely as a pensive narrative reflecting on a memory of times past. The meditative, lyrical nature of the music allows the instrumentalist to recollect, re-experience and validate, then finally file away a vestige of years gone by. A sparse optional piano accompaniment supports the notion of a distant thought coming into focus, gathering meaning, then evaporating into the ether.

Romanze Collection
Composer: Various Arranger: Rowe, Howard
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Euphonium, Piano
Genre: Classicalwith Piano
Arranger Kristy Rowe writes the following about Romanze:
“The idea of creating a baritone album of romantic pieces came about in 2011 while studying at the Royal Northern College of Music. I found the Schumann Romances in a pile of old music in the RNCM library during my first week of studies. A few months later, I prepared them for a lesson with my mentor, Steven Mead, and he immediately realized the suitability of this genre of music for the baritone. It was this inspiration that ignited the idea of creating an album of romantic pieces for the baritone. While some changes were necessary in the process of making the pieces “baritone friendly”, I have tried to stay as true to the original composers’ intent as possible. I have always been drawn to Romantic music and the musical freedom that it encourages. I hope others find the same sense of enjoyment from playing or listening to this music.”
Romanze is a collection of sheet music from the album “Romanze”. Titles include:
Romanze, Friedrich Diethe
Notturno, Robert Clerisse
Three Romances (op. 94), Robert Schumann
Arioso, Joseph Hector Fiocco
Six Nocturnes (op. 186), Johann Wenzel Kalliwoda
Adagio (op. 9), Vojtech Jirovec
Nocturne (op. 55, nr. 1), Josef Holbrooke
Romanze (op. 85), Max Bruch

Tongue in Cheek
Composer: Self, Jim
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Tuba
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano
Tongue in Cheek was written for my former DMA student David Holben who is an active free-lancer and recitalist in the Los Angeles area. He has become quite a specialist on the cimbasso and wanted a piece for cimbasso (or bass tuba) and Piano. It was premiered October 22, 2014 at Biola University on cimbasso with Rose Chen on Piano.
Tongue in Cheek is a short (3:30), fun piece with lots of fast changes and a few humorous snippets of familiar melodies—hence the title. It explores the full range from pedal Bb to F above middle C and is for the advance player. The harmonic structure is a mix of tonal, modal and bi-tonalities. The first section is a lively scherzo with lots of rhythmic and melodic interplay between the instruments. The middle is a slower waltz returning to the scherzo tempo with development of the original material and a sudden ending.

Lament
Composer: Guardia Jr., Alejandro
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Tuba
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano
From composer Alejandro Guardia Jr.:
“The saying ‘It is always darkest before the dawn’ is the inspiration of this piece. The piece begins with the soloist playing the slow sorrowful melodt as the piano pans a heavy chord progression. This progression is the basis of the theme and variations that follow. As the piece develops, the soloist and the accompaniment try to escape the distress and grief. Just as it seems as if there is no end to the suffering, the soloist pushes through the busy accompaniment and breaks free from the chains of its depression. The opening melody is now played in a major key in the upper register of the instrument, showing that a silver lining has been found, hope prevails and a new day has risen.”

Mephisto Masque
Composer: Dédé, Edmond Arranger: Werden, David
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Euphonium, Piano
Genre: Romantic, Virtuosicwith Piano
Edmond Dédé (1827-1903) was a free-born black from New Orleans. He was a noted violinist and composer. Finding life hard in the mid-1800's for a black musician, he moved to Mexico and then ultimately to France. He composed "Mephisto Masque" in the 1860's. It was written for ophicleide and orchestra - today our closest modern solo instrument would be the euphonium.
This arrangement was done for euphonium (or ophicleide) with piano accompaniment. Mr. Werden wrote the piano accompaniment by combining elements from Dédé's orchestral accompaniment and his solo piano version. It consists of a haunting opening section, a lively polka, and an energetic coda. The arrangement's goal is to make this fine piece by an American-born black composer available for convenient performance in recitals.Update Required To play the media you will need to either update your browser to a recent version or update your Flash plugin. From $17.00

A Caged Bird
Composer: York, Barbara
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Bass Trombone, Piano
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano
This piece was not written specifically in response to either the poem by Maya Angelou or that by Paul Dunbar that both refer to “the caged bird”. However, there is no doubt that both poems have inspired my own further exploration and now musical extrapolation on the subject of being “caged” and of still “singing” in spite of this. With all due respect and admiration for Ms. Angelou and Mr. Dunbar, I have attempted here in my own concept of “cagedness” to include, beyond racial references, also those issues that include gender, sexuality, economic status, medical/physical problems and any number of other situations that create restrictive and even imprisoning boundaries from which we and all others struggle to break free and find fully human, creative and even spiritual expression within ourselves. Even within the many bonds and restrictive boundaries that we often find ourselves, it still seems to be a fundamental part of our Nature as both human and Spiritual beings that we cannot help but “sing” in both joy and praise both from ourselves and to our own Creator despite the sometimes, even apparently insurmountable obstacles we encounter. For me, this piece is not so much an exploration as to “why the caged bird sings” as it is simply a commenting, even with some measure of wonderment, on its remarkable inevitability.

Where Leaves and Birds a Music Spin
Composer: McMillan, Benjamin
Instrumentation: Duet and Piano Instruments: Flute, Piano, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryFor Flute/Piccolo, Tuba and Piano
From the composer:
“Where Leaves And Birds A Music Spin” consists of six short movements, each loosely depicting a scene in nature.
- Borne On a Great Wind
- And the River Flows Ever Onwards
- Emerson’s Acorn
- Through Dawn Mist, A Doe
- Dauwtrappen
- Lithic Engines
The first scene is a fantasy of being carried on the wind, rushing over the landscape below. The second follows the journey of a river, through winding meandering paths to rapids. The third movement is based on a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson’s essay on History that reads, “The creation of a thousand forests is in one acorn.” In the fourth, a scene unfolds of a foggy morning and the appearance of a doe. The word Dauwtrappen comes from Dutch and describes the concept of walking barefoot in the morning grass when the grass is still covered in dew. The final movement imagines the inner workings of the planet, with lithic, or rock and magma, engines driving continents, creating new lands, mountain ranges, as well as the slow destruction and recycling of the old.
Although I have suggested scenes with each title, I don’t intend these to be concrete depictions, and the listener should let their minds wander freely and create their own scenes as the piece progresses.
