Three Grooves
Composer: Holtz, Tom
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Euphonium
Genre: ContemporaryThe idea for these duets came from programming a duet recital with my colleague and dear friend, Dr. Joanna Hersey, Associate Professor of Low Brass at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke. She had several new arrangements for us to perform, and she had set them specifically to be rehearsed and performed by her students. She suggested I write something jazzy for us to play that her students could also work on in lessons. What started out as a quick dose of pseudo-dixieland turned into something quite different.
“Tango” is built on a straight-eighth-note groove. It’s meant to be danceable without being too fast or too loud. Players should have fun with the style while being very strict about time and rhythm. “Bolero” challenges players to provide a steady, rhythmic bass line in the often unwieldy lower registers of the horn, and long, lyrical melodies in the upper register. “Jam” is all about having fun. It is built around basic harmonic and rhythmic patterns, and is meant to be played aggressively. My hope is that players build necessary skills while preparing these duets, and get a hefty round of applause for their efforts at the performance.
Thanks go to Walter Sear (1930-2010), whose books of tuba duets form a cornerstone of low brass chamber repertoire. Thanks also to my colleagues in “The President’s Own”, Chris Tiedeman and Paul Mergen, who often reminded me of how much fun duets can be every time they pulled out their well-loved, dog-eared copy of the Sear book. This work is dedicated to Dr. Joanna Hersey and her studio at the University of North Carolina at Pembroke for their inspiration, dedication, and spirit. My sincere thanks to all of you for making this project a reality.

Six Concert Caprices
Composer: Gulino, Frank
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Euphonium, Trombone, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryThis duet book comes in both a low and high key and can be played by various combinations of low brass instruments.
This book seeks to provide low brass players with useful, enjoyable materials that can be used effectively as both pedagogical tools and performance pieces. By incorporating a variety of keys, articulations, meters, phrase structures, and styles, these duets present countless opportunities for musical and technical development without feeling so exercise-like as to preclude them from having a place on recital programs.
While thinking about this project, I received a number of messages from tubists, euphoniumists, and trombonists—performers and pedagogues alike—lamenting the various challenges they face when searching for duet literature. For example, trombonists looking for materials to play alongside their tuba students face a dilemma: most tuba duets are too low for the trombone, while most trombone duets are too high for the tuba. Others remarked that some tuba duets ignore the upper tessitura, making them unhelpful to players looking to build range and facility, or pointed out that many trombone duets are either musically fulfilling or technically accessible to non-professional players, but not both. The quality of low brass duet literature also varies widely, with little overlap between works that make useful teaching tools and those which are musically compelling enough to perform.
To address some of these issues, the duets in this book present a variety of technical challenges without losing sight of the importance of sound, pitch, phrasing and musicianship. Whether addressing technical issues like range, articulation, or velocity, each piece also requires that players pay attention to style, tone production, and ensemble playing. Moreover, each duet appears in two different keys, separated variously by a perfect fourth, tritone, or perfect fifth in order to avoid extreme ranges or particularly unwieldy key signatures. This allows players to learn each piece in the more comfortable tessitura first (tuba players beginning with the lower-keyed version, for instance), empowering them to subsequently approach the more challenging tessitura already armed with a musical plan of attack and command of the melodic lines and intervals.
Although some of the pieces in this book will undoubtedly be more or less challenging than others, depending on the combination of instruments and experience levels possessed by the performers, the hope is that each one adds value by providing opportunities to hone our musical and technical skills, allowing teachers to perform alongside their students, or allowing students to play with one another. I am grateful to all of those who reached out with thoughts about this project and hope you enjoy these Six Concert Caprices.

Something Old, Something New
Composer: Hadden, John
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Euphonium, Trombone
Genre: Classical, ContemporaryAs a member of the low brass family, I often find myself humming famous melodies that the “back row” does not ever get the chance to play. Ironically, the only thing missing from some of these melodies is the majestic sound of a of our gentle giants. As many of my low brass brothers and sisters would likely share this sentiment, it was time that these melodies were graciously set our stands! Something Old, Something New: Ten Duets for Trombone/Euphonium takes several of these legendary lines and alters them in all sorts of ways so that every low brass player may bellow out the classics. Of the set, half are completely original works and half are based on orchestral excerpts that musicians everywhere recognize and cherish.

Zugzwang!
Composer: Dempsey, Ray
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Bassoon, French Horn
Genre: ContemporaryComposer Thomas Dempster says, “In the widely-known and respected game of chess, the Zugzwang is a forced move that a defending player has to move in order to, you know, not die. It’s a move a player has to make in order to avoid checkmate. This is one of the endgame scenarios in chess, with the player forcing the Zugzwang basically holding the upper hand… It’s a chase to the end. I envisioned the horn and bassoon as two figures engaged in a quick back and forth with a chase to the finish, each instrument showing off its own arsenal while occasionally borrowing pawns or bishops from the other side of the board to make a point.” Learn More$22.95 -
A Walk in the Woods
Composer: Panza, Michael
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Flute, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryA Walk in the Woods for Flute and Tuba is a Suite in three movements. The first movement, ‘Start of the Journey’, is light and filled with excitement and anticipation of the ‘journey’ ahead. The middle of the movement utilizes a familiar theme in celebration of joy for the impending trip.
The second movement, ‘Exploration in the Phrygian Woods’, uses the Phrygian mode to give the feeling of wonder and suspense of what our two musicians may find. The flute starts with the lead, but the tuba, not to be outdone, quickly takes the melody to have his turn to ‘explore’ the movement. The two join forces to end this movement.
The final movement, ‘Lost and Found’ begins very dark and slow giving the audience the sense of helplessness. But, the sun shines through and our two musicians find their way out of the woods with a light and playful melody. The movement comes to an end as all are well and at peace once more.
Please enjoy, ‘A Walk in the Woods’ for Flute and Tuba. Learn More

Tribute Duets
Composer: Bough, Thomas
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryThis duet set is indeed a tribute, in so many ways. First, to Dr.’s Danielle Van Tuinen and Jeffrey Malecki, among many, who helped sponsor the composition. Second, to my friend of many years, my host for the Missouri State Low Brass Day, and a fine euphonium player, Dr. Jennifer Jester. The music was composed for us to premiere at the MSU Low Brass Day on March 29, 2020 in Springfield, Missouri. The first movement draws on thematic elements from the rock tune “Tom Sawyer”, performed by the Canadian rock trio known as “Rush.” Their drum set player and lyricist Neil Peart passed away in early 2020, about the time I was writing this music. I can still remember hearing this song, the opening track from their album “Moving Pictures” when I was in high school. The relentless groove that Neil laid down on this album, and so many other albums from this band, had a profound impact on my understanding of pulse, time, and musical flow. The second movement is a tribute to Sam Pilafian, my tuba professor (and Jennifer’s) at Arizona State University. This music draws on some of the fundamental grooves from latin music, such as the 2-3 clave, the piano montuno, and the bass figures that accompany these two ideas. So many musicians were influenced by Sam, in so many ways, that I can only attempt to describe how much he meant to me, both personally and professionally. Three Sketches
Composer: Lester, Ian
Instrumentation: Trio Instruments: Euphonium, Piano, Tuba
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano Three Sketches for Euphonium, Tuba, and Piano was written for the Conviviality Trio based out of Ann Arbor, MI. Non-programmatic and serious in nature, the work is divided into three distinct movements that feature all instruments prominently. The first movement begins mysteriously, struggling to find balance between joy and sorrow. The tension builds harmonically and dynamically into a brief yet powerful fast section. After a reprise of the original material, the piano rips into rapid octave jumps which begins the "Aggressively" section, which puts the technical abilities of all three performers on full display. The movement ends with the original material making one last return. The second movement begins with a slow, jazzy noir-like atmosphere set by the pianist before the tuba and euphonium enter, echoing each other throughout. A solo section follows, emphasizing the low register and the lyrical capabilities of the euphonium. The movement ends with a hypnotic back-and-forth progression between the three performers that diminishes to nothingness. The last movement again puts the technical capabilities of the performers on display. Beginning with several mixed-meter runs, the movement evolves into a tour de force finale that includes long, rapid runs in the piano and tuba and euphonium melodies in fourths. 14 Concert Duets for 2 Tubas or Bass Trombones
Composer: Various Arranger: Self, Jim
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Bass Trombone, Tuba
Genre: Classical2 tubas (or 2 bass trombones)
or tuba/bass trombone with downloadable backing tracks (downloads included for both parts 1 and 2) – recorded by Zach Collins
Concert Duets is a collection of 14 arrangements of works by prominent 18th-century composers, mostly taken from Trio Sonatas. Duet 11 is a Jim Self original work in the Rococo style; and Duets 12, 13 and 14 are arrangements of the three-movements of the Bach Concerto for Two Violins. Included with this edition are play-along recorded tracks by tubist Zach Collins, who also served as editor of the current edition.
I created these duets as Christmas gifts for my tuba playing friends, with the first duet being arranged in 1976. All 14 of the duets are challenging and fun to play and are especially effective as concert pieces.
As a young musician I had the privilege of playing duets with many of the world’s finest tubists including Harvey Phillips, John Fletcher, Bob Pallansch, Chester, Schmitz, Dan Perantoni, Toby Hanks, Ron Bishop, Winston Morris and Tommy Johnson. I learned more about playing music in these duo sessions than from any other musical activity I have ever experienced. Duets are powerful teaching tools for learning and mastering rhythm, phrasing and intonation and for developing overall musicianship.

Angels Carillons
Composer: Mañas, Adriana Figueroa
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Marimba, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryTuba and Marimba; Dedicated to my good friend Mark Nelson
Angels’ Carillons is Nelson’s second commission for a tuba work from this talented composer from Argentina. Dr. Nelson premiered Tango Images for tuba and piano two years ago at a Pima recital and now has the honor and privilege of premiering this new work for tuba and marimba. It is a single movement work featuring some unusual effects such as imitating the wind by blowing air through the tuba and affecting the pitch up and down through changing the mouth aperture. The marimba has several virtuosic passages with four mallet playing while the tuba is featured primarily as a melodic instrument. Hints of tango rhythms and extensive syncopation make the unusual combination of tuba and marimba exotic and exciting.
