Fanfare for Evan
Composer: Millsap, Kyle
Instrumentation: Sextet Instruments: Trumpet
Genre: ContemporaryOpening with an exciting fanfare, Fanfare for Evan quickly moves to a 7/8 section where three trumpets set up an ostinato that serves as the foundation for a rhythmically-intricate duet. This gives way to an ensemble accompaniment of sound moving up and down under a piccolo solo. The work moves to a minor tonality and features optional flugelhorns before recapping the excitement from before with a blended variation of the ostinato, duet, and piccolo solo. Fanfare for Evan is composed for six trumpets with the principal part doubling on piccolo and optional flugelhorn doubles for the fifth and sixth parts. Souvenir de Porto Rico
Composer: Gottschalk, Louis Arranger: Renshaw, Gretchen
Instrumentation: Sextet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
Genre: ClassicalEEETTT
Arranger Gretchen Renshaw says, “Piano prodigy and composer Louis Gottschalk struggled to gain acceptance in Western music due to his American heritage. However, through extensive traveling and performing, he became the first North American to earn an international reputation as a pianist and composer. Gottschalk’s travels took him to Puerto Rico in 1857-58, where he became inspired by the music he heard there. This inspiration led to Souvenir de Porto Rico, a virtuosic character piece originally written for piano. The piece features two themes – one in march style, the other lyrical – and Gottschalk subjects these themes to a series of variations which he arranges in an arch form… Arranged here for tuba-euphonium ensemble, this exciting work will challenge players technically and stylistically as they work to find Gottschalk’s Puerto Rican groove.”

High Priest
Composer: Tyner, McCoy Arranger: Johnson and Brown
Instrumentation: Sextet Instruments: Bass, Drum Set, Piano, Tuba
Genre: Jazz6 Tubas, Piano, Bass and Drum Set
“The High Priest is McCoy’s tribute to the high priest of Jazz- Thelonious Monk. The form is an eleven bar blues.”
- Howard Johnson
High Priest was recorded, with Howard Johnson playing tuba, in December 1967. This recorded album, Tender Moments, was subsequently released in 1968 on the Blue Note label. Later in 1992 on the Turning Point record album, High Priest was recorded again featuring McCoy Tyner’s big band, which included Howard Johnson on tuba and as an arranger.
Howard Johnson’s jazz tuba ensemble is envisioned as a tuba choir- with tubas in F, E flat, CC, and BB flat- that encourages tuba players to learn to play in the upper register. His charts were originally written for his tuba jazz ensemble, Gravity, formed in 1968 with Howard Johnson as solo lead tuba. The charts can in fact be performed with euphoniums; but he formed his group, made his arrangements and developed this specific instrumentation 50 years ago as a statement about tubas and prefers to hear his arrangements played in this configuration, encouraging tuba players to develop the range required. His most important advice is that whatever instrumentation is used, make it fun and find the best jazz rhythm section!

In Memory of our friend Tubabass Tzu-Ming Hsu Commissioned by EuTuba Euphonium and Tuba Ensemble.
This piece was commissioned by my close friend, Tubabass Tzu-Ming Hsu who was the member of EuTuba Euphonium and Tuba Ensemble and holds New Year's celebrations every year for Taiwanese bass and euphonium players. He told me that he would love to have a theme song for the New Year's event and we could play it every year. His enthusiasm for music and low brass group always touches me. Unfortunately, our friend left us before the premiere.
The first part of the piece begins with a powerful rhythm which means we have firm confidence and courage and ready to set off again. The opening section leads into a slow and touching melody which shows the charm of low brass.
I wrote this piece to encourage all the musicians and ensemble affected by the pandemic. Finally, I want to say to you in heaven, we will work hard to enforce your spirit and beliefs.
We will play this piece at New Year's events every year.

Beautiful Journey
Composer: Liang, Wan-Yun
Instrumentation: Sextet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryThis work is a tribute to the prominent contemporary composer Barbara York. The work was commissioned by Cimarron Music Press and the instructions were it has to be fun, quirky, and also contain beautiful melodies.
The piece begins with a prelude which pays homage to the various styles in Barbara’s compositions. After the prelude, the music contains quotes from Barbara’s various works and includes “How Beautiful”, “Quirky” from “Personalities”, “Through the Tunnel”, “Arioso Gloria” and ends with “Every Day an Alleluia”.
I humbly hope that when the music is played it evokes the emotional character of Barbara’s music and allows us to celebrate her life and contributions to the low brass community.

4th Avenue Suite
Composer: Paff, John
Instrumentation: Sextet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryEEETTT4th Avenue Suite is a composition set for three euphoniums and three tubas. Its inspiration comes from a vacation at North Carolina’s Outer Banks when we were staying in a rental house on 4th Avenue. The tunes are derived from a sequence of numbers used to open the digital door lock of the house for that week. The numbers, 3 6 8 2 4 3, are employed by their numerical placement in a musical scale. I thought: “What if; these numbers could be made into a tune (or several)?” The entire suite is not confined to these notes, but the tunes in the movements have grown out of this sequence. To construct several generations from a set of notes seemed enough, so no attempt has been made to relate the movements to events or situations. The movements are subtitled as follows: I. Intrada; II. Intermezzo; III. Minuet; and IV. Finale. The challenge level is Medium to Medium Difficult. All players are utilized in important roles and the composition offers various combinations of featured players, sections with just euphoniums or just tubas, and total ensemble. Learn More

Centralia
Composer: Lester, Ian
Instrumentation: Sextet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryEEETTT; Centralia is a work for tuba/euphonium sextet that is inspired by Centralia, PA - an old mining town that has had a fire burning underneath the municipality since 1962. The original cause of the fire is still debated. There are caution signs posted around the city warning of the risks of walking or driving through the town, as the ground is considered unstable above the blaze. As of 2017, Centralia has a population of five, making it a barren ghost town which some consider a gateway to hell itself. Overture for a New Day
Composer: Paff, John
Instrumentation: Sextet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryEEETTTOverture for a New Day is a programmatic piece set for three euphoniums and three tubas. The progression of the music takes the listener through phases of a day, starting with Daybreak. The day continues with Morning Mist, Midday, Afternoon Antics, Twilight and Night, with the music suggesting qualities that might go with these times of a day.
This ensemble aims to show the ways that such a group can work as a blending whole and then also feature the two sections, as well as giving the individual lines opportunities to shine. The performance level is medium trending toward medium-difficult. As this instrumentation is not as available as some, it affords a unique opportunity for euphonium and tuba players. Learn More

In Time
Composer: Zugger, Thomas
Instrumentation: Sextet Instruments: Alto Trombone, Bass Trombone, Trombone
Genre: Contemporary6 parts; In Time was composed January 1st 2007 and premiered later that month by the Capital University Trombone choir at the Indiana IMEA conference. It was composed in honor of my mother Virginia Schwan Zugger who died of cancer July 2006. Her mothers name was Lina McGinty, part of my half Irish heritage. It is an Irish Air composed from memories of the lullaby’s my mother sang to us when we were children.
The lead is actually in trombone one and that voice should drive both the dynamic and the phrasing. Alto trombone is an obbligato line and is good for inexperienced players as it centers around Eb. The work can be performed one on a part without conductor, or with a much larger group with conductor. It is a song of love and loss and should be played with that feeling. Learn More
