Last Breath, The
Composer: Wilson, Kenyon
Instrumentation: Octet Instruments: Bass Trombone, Trombone
Genre: ContemporaryFrom the composer:
One thing humans all have in common is that one day we will all take our very last breath of life. This piece explores the entire range of emotions we might experience as we take this last breath and reflect on our lives, from revelation in our most joyous memories to resignation to our ultimate fate.
As a member of the Atlanta Trombone Ensemble, I specifically composed this piece to both highlight the group’s strengths while challenging the group’s weaknesses. I kept a fairly basic chord structure for clarity, but incorporated a few meter and tempo changes. The melodic material is passed around among all parts, so everyone gets a moment in the spotlight. A lovely cascading figure at the end between all parts highlights the group as a whole rather than featuring any individual parts.
I am honored to have composed this for the Atlanta Trombone Ensemble.

Kidstuff Protocols
Composer: Kirby, Benedict
Instrumentation: Octet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryEEEETTTT Kidstuff Protocols was written in the spring of 2019 for the University of Montana Tuba and Euphonium Choir as part of their programing for their performance at the 2019 International Tuba and Euphonium Conference held in Iowa City, IA in May of that year. The music is a modern, yet mischievous mashup of 8 references to well known children’s songs - in keeping with that conference’s “Young At Heart Theme. The tunes are separated by connective material meant to provide cohesion to the composition. Each tune iteration has its own unique style and all of them except for The Muffin Man and the cadenza rendering of the “Villa Borghese” should have a sense of high energy regardless of dynamic. Their order of their appearance is as follows: 1) Mary Had a Little Lamb - in hot swing style (with the low tubas serving as percussionists with hi-hat special effects (beat-boxing the vocals into the tuba while crisply slapping the lower right side of the instrument) 2) Camptown Races - partially set as a 3 against 2 hemiola. 3) Nick Nack Paddywack (also known as This Old Man) - set as a brief march. 4) Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star - briefly set in the Lydian mode. 5) Children’s theme from I. Villa Borghese of Respighi’s Pines of Rome - set as a cadenza answer to the euphonium cadenza which precedes it. 6) The Muffin Man - harmonized in barbershop quartet (in this case octet!) style. 7) Row, Row Row Your Boat - set in a polyharmonic march style. 8) Mary Had a Little Lamb - recapitulation as in the beginning with more intensity. Humboldt Currents, Op. 174
Composer: Kibbe, Michael
Instrumentation: Octet Instruments: French Horn, Trombone, Trumpet, Tuba
Genre: Contemporary3 Trumpets, Horn, 3 Trombones and TubaA brisk allegro opens this work for eight brass instruments. Plenty of tuneful activity is provided for all players. A slow second movement calls for some muting of the instruments, lending a softer more subdued color. The final movement opens with a slow introduction followed by a rapidly moving main section, into which are introduced two original tunes in the style of “sea shanties.” By the end of the piece these two tunes have combined, bringing the work to a lively conclusion.

Midnight Sounds
Composer: Zugger, Thomas
Instrumentation: Octet Instruments: Trombone
Genre: Contemporary8 partsMidnight Sounds, which subtitled An Alaskan Portrait, was composed in 2008 after traveling to Alaska. The extraordinary scenery Resurrection Bay and Denali National Park was inspiring. The piece is in four sections: introduction, allegro, moderato and allegro/coda. The opening motive is based on the open fourth and fifth interval. That motive is passed throughout the ensemble and is also altered to create the melody of the allegro. Every vista in Alaska is larger than life, space is abundant everywhere. I’ve tried to capture that space and beauty using the most resonant of all instruments! Learn More
