This book is born out of my experience teaching economically disadvantaged folk and wanting there to be a better way of getting my students materials than stealing the work of my colleagues by making photocopies of singular exercises out of books. We, as teachers and students, have all had books that were 50-300 pages long that we would like our students to own, but do not ask them to purchase because they might only use 3-20 pages. My students, generally, cannot afford to buy every book and musicians cannot afford to give away their work for free. This book is not meant to be exhaustive or original in content. It is meant to meant to be a survey of some of the work needed to become one of “the world’s best,” meant to inspire a student to purchase books that are more in depth on the concepts presented, and most of all, meant to give a student one book that touches on most skills needed in the western art aesthetic.

Serenade for Euphonium (Op. 21)
Composer: Forsberg, Charles
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Euphonium, Piano
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano
Serenade, Op.21, for Euphonium and Orchestra was composed in January 1979 as a work commissioned by Henry Charles Smith for the Minnesota Orchestra. Smith, longtime principal trombonist with the Philadelphia Orchestra before assuming the resident conductor/trombone post with the Minnesota Orchestra, was the soloist on euphonium in the premiere subscription concert performances with the orchestra later that year.
The Serenade is “an attractive, accessible but by no means insubstantial work” (Michael Anthony review, Minneapolis Star Tribune) for the instrument and orchestra. The Serenade runs about 15 minutes, is cast in four sections, and there is much of a feeling of a serenade about it, especially in the first two sections. Even the scherzo-like third section, after several pages of brassy, rhythmically vibrant activity, concludes with a series of slow, upward moving, yearning phrases in the solo instrument. The work is tonal and in the orchestral version, there is a considerable amount of solo work from various instruments of the orchestra – like the dialogue between the euphonium and the oboe in the “Nocturne” second section. Forsberg always keeps the solo instrument busy, especially in the festive finale. But his concern seems to be less with virtuosic display - or with exploring new techniques for the instrument – than with exploiting the instrument’s lyrical potential. Although written especially for the euphonium, the work might be performed as well with the tenor trombone. After editing and a few minor revisions from the 1979 manuscript score, the piece will now be available from Cimarron Music Press in piano, orchestra and wind ensemble accompaniment versions.

Concerto for Euphonium
Composer: Nunes, Matthew
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Euphonium, Piano
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano
This Concerto for Euphonium and Wind Band was composed for one of my former teachers and fellow euphonist Dr. Gail Robertson. For this work I based the material around pitches corresponding to each letter of her first name: G = G natural; A = A natural; I = Ionian, or the current key’s tonic, C natural; L = Lydian, or the fourth degree of the current key, F natural. Each movement is derived in some way from this figure.
The work begins with an energetic fanfare and a taste of the second theme. The euphonium enters with similar pomp and dazzling virtuosity that settles into more heroic statements. Next, the euphonium soars over thick ensemble textures in a tender reflection. Finally, the soloist charges forth in a ferocious display of dexterity and power.
The Concerto premiered April 21st, 2016 by Dr. Gail Robertson (euphonium) and the Little Rock Wind Symphony - Israel Getzov, conductor.

Concerto for Euphonium
Composer: Bough, Thomas
Instrumentation: Solo and Wind Band Instruments: EuphoniumWith Concert Band; The "Concerto for Euphonium" was written to celebrate the music prowess and unmistakable artistry of Dr. Demondrae Thurman. Each of the four movements is a tribute to him in a different way. In the first, the virtuostic potential of the euphonium is on display through the assymetric meter, extensive range demands and dual cadenzas. In the second, you can literally hear Demondrae singing his children to sleep with two French-Candadian lullabies. In the third, listen to his moving and beautiful rendition of his favorite spiritual, "Deep River." In the final movement, the joy of music and life explode into a triumphant, up-tempo setting of "Deep River." Bring your high chops, because this movement launches into the stratosphere! 10 Trios for Euphonium and Two Tubas
Composer: Paff, John
Instrumentation: Trio Instruments: Tuba
Genre: Contemporary10 Trios for Euphonium and Two Tubas is a collection of trios in various styles. By utilizing tubas and a euphonium, a greater range is possible than with either instrument alone, while staying with similar tonal properties. All three instruments are integral in the construction of each selection, and each player is given opportunities to shine. The first four selections could be played together as a suite, but any of the ten can stand alone. The difficulty level ranges from medium to medium difficult. Concerto for Euphonium
Composer: Liang, Wan-Yun
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Euphonium, Piano
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano (band version available soon)
Ms. Wan-Yun Liang is a young Taiwanese woman composer, whose works mostly focus on winds chamber music as well as ensemble works. The Euphonium Concerto, Ms. Liang’s latest composition, was commissioned by Shih-Yao Huang, a Taiwanese Baritone player, and the winds ensemble of National Chung Hsing University, Taiwan. This Concerto contains three movements. The first movement is in a sonata form with two contrasting style melodies. The second movement is titled “Rondo” and the main theme is played by the Alto Saxophone player. In the middle section of this movement, the music turns into a charming waltz and which leads goes back to the beginning section. The third movement is a fast dancing movement with a slow introduction. As a brass player herself, Ms. Liang is willing to give the solo part many fast tonguing passages as well lyrical melodies to demonstrate the specific characteristics of this instrument. This work was premiered in July 7th, 2018, by Shih-Yao Huang and the winds ensemble of National Chung Hsing University, Taiwan, under the direction of Chwan-Yaw Foo.

Concerto for Euphonium
Composer: York, Barbara
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Euphonium, Piano
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano
In four movements and subtitled "Creative States", this concerto will allow the audience's imagination run wild as the performer paints the picture:
I. Wonder
II. Emptiness
III. Emptiness
IV. Joy
This piece was commissioned by:
Amy Schumaker Bliss
Lauren Veronie Curran
Jonathan Helmick
Jamie Lipton
Gail Robertson
Travis Scott
Evagene Wellman
I tend to think that the subtitle and movement titles of this piece should be fairly self explanatory. However, after thinking about it a bit I realized that perhaps there is room for at least a little elaboration. This piece is about states that I (and you?) can put myself in when I have little or no inspiration for a piece. In that sense, it was a bit of a joke on myself as I was writing this concerto. I have always claimed that there is plenty of human and personal subject matter about which to write, so this is about what one can do when not feeling particularly inspired.
Three of the movements are states of childlike awareness - Wonder, Playfulness and Joy. The second movement is more of a meditative state, Emptiness, and is musically reflective of the piano "Gymnopedies" of Erik Satie. To me, it is a zen like emptying of oneself, creating a mental and emotional vacuum into which inspiration can enter. What is not mentioned here is that deadlines can also be a powerful impetus towards creativity for composers and other artists. Deadlines are the most terrifying, but often the most effective.
