Twenty Characteristic Etudes for Tuba
Composer: Fritze, Gregory
Instrumentation: Tuba Methods/Studies/Etudes Instruments: Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryThe following twenty etudes were composed to help prepare the advanced tubist for the orchestral, chamber and solo repertoire. Each etude specifies distinct characteristics of a particular compositional style that the tubist may encounter in a professional performing situation.Performing these etudes requires the basics of technique such as flexibility, articulation, cantabile, intonation, slurring, intervals, tonguing, rhythm, scales and developed tessitura. Among the twenty etudes, at least one etude has been composed in each of the twelve tonal centers. Many of these etudes also contain exercises for the contemporary tubist in dimensions such as expanded tonality, ametrical rhythms, non vocal intervalic melody, metric-modulation, finger dexterity, abrupt dynamic contrasts and synthetic scales.
Some of the etudes have metronomic markings suggesting ranges of tempi; these are "goal" tempi. In many cases it is suggested that the performer start at a slower tempo and build up to these goals.
Many of these etudes include obvious quotations from the masterworks of the literature which will remind the performer what preparation is needed for a particular style. Within the twenty etudes, the composer has included over a dozen direct quotations to help the performer. Some of these quotations are very obvious while some have been hidden within the fabric of the composition. As an exercise, the performer may want to write in the names of these quotations as they appear in these etudes.
Although this set of etudes has been specifically composed for the advanced college and professional tubist, performers of intermediate ability may find some of the studies helpful at slower tempi. These etudes will work well for tubas in all keys, although a few of the etudes have been composed especially for the CC tuba.

12 Easy Duets for Tuba
Composer: Paff, John
Instrumentation: Duet Instruments: Tuba
Genre: Contemporary12 Easy Duets for Tuba is designed with young or inexperienced players in mind who may have limited or no previous experience with duets or chamber music. Rhythms, ranges and key signatures are limited in order to accommodate the player in adjusting to the concept of playing in harmony, as well as developing mutual cooperation necessary in playing a duet. The selections are in a variety of styles, while avoiding faster tempos that could add difficulty without benefit. While written to help instruct, the duets are intended to be performable. A young player can feel a great sense of accomplishment when performing a new (to the player) kind of music, and duets can feel more “safe” than a solo to a young performer. Enjoy the fun of playing duets! Learn MoreUpdate Required To play the media you will need to either update your browser to a recent version or update your Flash plugin. From $12.00

Concerto for Tuba
Composer: McMillan, Benjamin
Instrumentation: Solo and Piano Instruments: Piano, Tuba
Genre: Contemporarywith Piano
This work was commissioned by Timothy Northcut in honor of Winston Morris, professor of tuba and euphonium at Tennessee Tech University since 1967. Among many others, his former students—both Tim and I included—call him a mentor, friend, and genuine hero to the tuba-euphonium world. Anyone who’s met Winston knows that he’s a larger-than-life character, and our goal was to capture a snapshot of that character within the piece.
The first movement, RWM, is constructed from a rhythmic motive that forms the basis of the entire work: 1/4 note followed by 4 1/8 notes
This motive, based on the name ‘R. Winston Morris’, becomes the driving force throughout the work, acting as a musical anchor point. The entrance of the solo tuba introduces the main musical theme that goes on to form much of the melodic material. Conceptually, the first movement represents a day in September of 1967 as Morris began his career at Tennessee Tech University. Beginning with a gentle, noble theme, the mood quickly builds and shifts into an energetic and sometimes whimsical whirlwind. The end of the movement relentlessly hammers out the motive—a tribute to Winston’s unrelenting musical drive. This abruptly shifts with the final note, moving seamlessly into the second movement.
The second movement, Sweet Steel, is dedicated in loving memory to Barbara “Bobbie” Morris. Although the tone is very dark and brooding, it’s ultimately a love song by the soloist, journeying through the stages of grief. From the darkness a second theme, hopeful and uplifting, rises to a heartfelt climax.
The final movement, Cookevegas, is a tongue-in-cheek reference to Cookeville, TN, home of Winston and Tennessee Tech University. His love of jazz is a major influence on this hectic, jazzy trip through the small Southern city. A return of the driving ‘RWM’ motive from the first movement brings the concerto to its finale.
Recording is from the premiere with the U.S. Army Band:

10 Easy Tuba Quartets
Composer: Paff, John
Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryEETTThis collection of quartets is designed for players who may have had limited experience with small ensemble performance. The ranges are moderate and the rhythms are not complex. Each of the selections offer ensemble and solo or featured passages for all players. Styles, tempos and meters vary from one piece to another. Of course, more advanced players can certainly play and enjoy this set, but the less experienced can have some success with pieces that allow them to concentrate on the musical and ensemble aspects, rather than being slowed by technical elements. These are also designed for the listener’s enjoyment. Enjoy the quartets! Learn More

Mini-Suite for Solo Tuba
Composer: Ingram, Charles
Instrumentation: Solo Instruments: Tuba
Genre: Contemporaryunaccompanied
I. Praeludium
II. Getting Around
III. Simple Song
IV. Off Waltz
V. Pompous March
VI. Faux Gigue
The Mini Suite for Solo Tuba was composed in 2015 for my good friend Dr. Richard Perry who is the Tuba/Euphonium professor at the University of Southern Mississippi. Dr. Perry was preparing a recital of unaccompanied music for tuba, and he asked me for a new piece.
The structure of the Mini Suite is very loosely based on the idea of the Baroque instrumental suite. While the Baroque suite is based on a series of dances, this one consists of six movements which are fleeting impressions found in the character pieces that are common in the Romantic period. The last movement is the only one that gives the nod to an actual dance found in the traditional Baroque suite.
The first movement, Praeludium, has no programmatic title and serves the purpose of opening the suite.
The second movement, Getting Around, gives the impression of someone who is far too busy to take time for himself until the last measure when he succumbs to exhaustion.
The third movement, Simple Song, is just that; a simple melody that is delivered without any undue fussiness.
The next movement, Off Waltz, is muted throughout and the steady rhythm that embodies the waltz is obscured on several occasions so that the beat is “off”.
The Pompous March hints at a self-important individual strutting his stuff around town and unintentionally making a comical spectacle of himself.
The final movement, Faux Gigue, goes back to the model of the Baroque suite which generally ended with a lively gigue in compound meter. I decided to write this one in three-quarter time as opposed to one of the compound meters. The term faux is a nod to the fact that this piece does not have the contrapuntal texture that is characteristic of the gigue. It also has meter changes that occur here and there which throws the steadiness of the dance out of kilter.

Suite Tuba
Composer: Bough, Thomas
Instrumentation: Solo and Brass band Instruments: Tubawith Brass Band; Suite Tuba is dedicated to Sam Pilafian, the tuba player and founding member of the Empire Brass Quintet. The four movement composition represents one of the most substantial works for solo tuba and concert band in the last decade. This work was written by a tuba player for tuba players. Each movement represents the musical character of the tuba in a different light. The first movement juxtaposes the rhythmic complexity of shifting asymetric meters with a conga-supported fusion jazz melody. The second movement offers the soloist a chance to improvise and take the melodic lead on the Dixieland classic tune That's a Plenty. The third movement, Lullaby, allows the melodic character of the tuba to take center stage. The fourth movement weaves themes from the previous three movements into original material to bring the composition to a stirring climax. Learn MoreFrom $100.00

10 More Easy Tuba Quartets
Composer: Paff, John
Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Euphonium, Tuba
Genre: ContemporaryEETTThis set of quartets is a continuation of a previous set entitled: Ten Easy Quartets for 2 Euphoniums and 2 Tubas (CM5195). As in the previous volume, the intention is to have selections which are varied in style, while avoiding extreme ranges and key signatures, as well as avoiding complex or difficult rhythms. As in the first group, these give an opportunity for those inexperienced with small ensemble playing to develop these skills and feel a sense of accomplishment. To further identify these quartets with the first set, the numbers of the individual pieces begin with eleven and continue. Players and audiences will enjoy these selections. Learn More
