    Clarinet/Bass Clarinet, Trombone and Piano

Intersections was composed in 2013 as a commission for Duo Avanzando, clarinetist David Carter and percussionist Ricardo Coelho de Souza and premiered by them with trombonist Alexandra Zacharella at the University of Arkansas Fort Smith in February of that year. The piece is divided into four movements, each focusing on a different definition of the word intersect.

To pierce or divide by passing through or across

To meet and cross at a point

To share a common area, as in to overlap

The first movement, Three Hands is the point at which three melodies and three instruments intersect and overlap.  The second movement, Day and Night, is the intersection of written notation and improvisation.  The third movement Time and Space, is the both the overlapping and the intersection of 2 and 3, eighth notes and triplets.  The last movement is the physical meeting of two streets, Bourbon Street and Orleans St in New Orleans and the sounds that are heard nearby. The improvisational sections of movement II have listed pitches.  The performer can feel free to stay close to that notation or deviate as far as they wish.  Though individual parts have been included for movement II, performers may wish to work from the score. The tempo markings for each movement should be viewed as a guide.  The tempo for each ensemble should ideally be where the movement hits its groove, i.e. the Intersection of music and emotion.  Enjoy!
