    Genre: Contemporary
    with Piano

Constance is a piece composed for Nicholas Kevin Phillips, a saxophone player I met at the University of Central Florida, as a personal thank you for his generous donation to my “Get Matt to Maryland” Rally via rally.org. The inspiration for this work is the constant drive required to get where we want our lives to go. This is represented by the striving baritone saxophone melody. It evolves slowly, reflectively, aiming for the heights – a celebration of success and joy. The celebration is short-lived as we realize we have not yet arrived and that we are farther away than we initially thought… Learn More

  9. Drift

    Composer: Friedland, Zach
Instrumentation: Quintet Instruments: Alto Sax, Bass Clarinet, Bassoon, Clarinet, Oboe
    Genre: Contemporary

Oboe, Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, Bass Clarinet and Bassoon

Drift was written for the TIMBER Reed Quintet at the Ohio State University. Upon attending rehearsals and listening to the dynamic of the group, I was fascinated with the way the five instruments blended their sound together and the vast array of timbres that could emerge from the various combinations. This sparked my vision to create a piece that would highlight these abilities. Drift makes use of rhythmic ambiguity and uses a Jazz influence to create a musical idea of drifting along.

  10. Duende

    Composer: Nogueroles, Eduardo
Instrumentation: Solo and Percussion Instruments: Bass Clarinet, Euphonium, Marimba
    Genre: Contemporary

Bass Clarinet or Euphonium and Marimba

    From the composer:

Duende is a commission from Duo Antwerp, formed by Daniel Bellovi (Bass Clarinet) and Adilia Yip (Marimba), to promote the growth of bass clarinet as a solo instrument, and include Spanish music in the repertoire of this wonderful instrument.

It has been performed in its concerts by the Duo Antwerp in various countries. The version for euphonium and marimba was premiered at the AETYB Festival Madrid 2019- Super Regional ITEA by the Moreau VanTuinen Duo.

After an initial introduction in the form of lament, Duende develops between the first theme marked by the rhythmic ostinato of the marimba (register to low E) and the second theme in the form of buleria in which the two instruments alternate the melodic role. Interspersed between the two themes appear the demanding and suggestive cadences for the bass clarinet or the euphonium and the marimba.

The marked Spanish character of the piece, a good dose of virtuosity in the solo cadenzas, and catchy melodies to the rhythm of buleria, make Duende an irresistible score for a recital of bass clarinet or euphonium with marimba, for the performers and for the public.

  12. Five Inventions

    Composer: Raum, Elizabeth
Instrumentation: Trio Instruments: English Horn, Oboe
    Genre: Contemporary

    2 Oboes and English Horn:

I am an oboist, so when I was asked by the Can-Am Oboe Trio to write a new work for them, I felt right at home. For once, I could try out the parts and know if they worked without asking anybody else. My next concern was to figure out a theme that would suit the ensemble as well as offer a unifying thread. Throughout history, the number 3 has had magical connotations and this piece was to be written for a trio so I decided to further the synchronicity by writing three part inventions. That led to an interpretation of the word, “invention,” which in the case of Bach, is a musical form but for most of the rest of the world describes an object that has been newly created for a specific purpose. I decided to combine the two definitions by writing three part inventions with titles describing actual physical inventions. I wrote five movements with their names and styles depicting the following inventions.

    1. Spinning Wheel without which we would not have the ability to make cloth. You can hear the turning of the wheel and the up and down of the pedal in the music.

    2. Space Through a Telescope evokes the vastness of the universe giving a sense of galaxies and nebula unimaginable distances away.

    3. The Telegraph was an invention that allowed people to send and receive messages over long distances. Samuel Morse developed a “language” of dots and dashes to spell words that became the standard means of communication. Morse code for the word, “oboe.” is  --- -... --- . the rhythm upon which this movement is based.

    4. Video Games are possibly one of the most ubiquitous inventions of recent times with the accompanying music vying with the movie industry for popularity. This movement has a chase alternating with a superhero.

    5. The Dev’lish Angel Horn features the English horn, the lowest voice in the group. The name, “English horn” was originally thought to come from a mistranslation of the French word, anglé since the early English horns were bent. However, more scholarly research has found that it actually refers to the word “Angel” because many of the paintings of the Middle Ages had angels playing a bent woodwind instrument which they called “angelic horn.” In this movement, the “Angelic horn” is a bit of an imp and insists on being naughty at times and going her own way before she is hauled back into the angelic ensemble.

  13. Fort Worth Funk

    Composer: Bough, Thomas
Instrumentation: Quartet Instruments: Alto Sax, Baritone Sax, Soprano Sax, Tenor Sax
    Genre: Contemporary

    SATB:

Fort Worth Funk was written to provide a light-hearted, engaging selection for Saxophone Quartet.  It begins with a dramatic statement from the Baritone Saxophone, who lays down the opening groove.  The other members of the quartet enter one at a time, while the composition builds to a virtuostic moment for the full quartet.  The staggered entrances also provide an opportunity to stage theatrics as well.  Appropriate rhythms and articulations are meticulously notated to help players achieve an authentic “funk” style in their performance.  The piece is loosely based on the chord changes to the jazz standard “Well You Needn’t”, which appears briefly in swing style at the end of the piece.  Chord changes and written solos are provided during the improvised sections, to bring the piece within the grasp of a wide spectrum of players.
